Don't miss the Steeple to Steeple Tour this Saturday!

Portsmouth's annual Steeple to Steeple church and synagogue tour is Saturday, May 10, from 9am to 2:30pm.  This walking tour in Olde Towne Portsmouth takes you inside seven of Hampton Roads' most interesting and beautiful historic churches-including St. John's-as well as the Chevra T'helim synagogue.

The tour is led by three costumed interpreters and includes lunch.  Tickets are $20 (purchased in advance) and $25 at the door.  For tickets email Dean Burgess or call him @ 757.393.0973.

All profits go to the HER Shelter for battered women and other Kiwanis charities.  For more information, see www.steepletosteeple.com.

Holly, our bishop, returns to St. John's

This Sunday, May 11, our diocesan bishop returns to St. John's to preside, preach and confirm at 9am and 11am as well as speak informally during a light finger food brunch at 10:15am.

Want to help with brunch food for this event?  Contact Nancy Johnson at 757.646.2647.

Because of the large size of our diocese, Bishop Hollerith makes Sunday parish visitations about once every two to three years and normally only leads one Sunday Eucharist.

Given that our bishop has agreed to preside at both the 9am and 11am Eucharists, please make every effort to be present on this special day in the life of our parish!

Repairs on the North Transept underway

ET Gresham Company has begun repairs on the exterior of the North Transept (Memorial Garden & Founders' Chapel) wall.  Project manager Jeff Marshall will oversee the removal and replacement of damaged brick, point up holes and cracks with matching mortar, apply an invisible waterproofing membrane to the entire brick face, remove the old protective panels on the stained glass, repair damaged wood that is precariously holding the stained glass in place, paint the window trim to its original 1898 color, professionally clean the stained glass panels, and install new protective panels to protect the stained glass while allowing the architectural interest of the window trim to be more visible from the exterior.  When completed, the scaffolding will be moved to the interior of the Founders' Chapel wall so that workers can repair and paint the plaster and wood trim damaged by water intrusion.

Funding for this $25,800 project was authorized by the vestry from surplus funds generously given by parishioners to the 2013 budget!

Miscellany

Christian Formation for all ages continues this Sunday.

Contemplative Prayer meets each Monday.  We gather weekly in the Founders' Chapel from 6:30-7:30pm to worship God, using words, music, and our bodies.  Contemplative Prayer is a way of praying through listening, learning to go beyond words so that we can simply be present with God.  After an introduction to quiet prayer, we will sit in silence with each other and with God and then share a brief reflection on our prayer experience before finishing.

Praying for Portsmouth.  Interested in joining a group that regularly prays for the prospering of Portsmouth?  Contact Suzanne Erickson.

Summer Time is Prayer Time.   Join your St. John's friends and neighbors at 10am for coffee and prayer on the first Thursday of each month, May through August.  Bring your Adorations, Confessions, Thanksgivings, and Supplications.  We will be praying for St. John's Church, for Portsmouth and our businesses, our neighbors, friends and families. Pray with a group or in the Founders' Chapel alone, as you prefer.  Open to all.
