Holly, our bishop, returns to St. John's

On Sunday, May 11, our diocesan bishop, Herman "Holly" Hollerith, IV, returns to St. John's to preside, preach and confirm at 9am and 11am as well as lead our adult forum during a brunch reception at 10:10am.

Want to help with brunch food for this event?  Contact the Parish office.

Hollerith was consecrated as tenth bishop of the Diocese of Southern Virginia in February 2009.  A priest for twenty-five years before his consecration, he served parishes in South Carolina and Southwestern Virginia as well as Bruton Parish in Williamsburg.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Denison University and a Master of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School.  He enjoys "building things," especially boats, and is a devotee of maritime archeology with a special interest in early marine steam technology.  He is married to Elizabeth Salmons, and they have three children.

Bishop Hollerith is a direct descendant of Herman Hollerith (1860-1929), the German-American who invented machines that calculate using punched cards.  In many computer quarters, punched cards were long called "Hollerith cards" in his honor.

Because of the large size of our diocese, Bishop Hollerith makes Sunday parish visitations about once every two to three years.  He was last at St. John's in May of 2012.  Don't miss this special day in the life of our parish!

Miscellany

Christian Formation for all ages continues this Sunday.

Please pick up "lost" items that belong to you from Holy Week & the St. Fiacre Festival.  All items are on tables in the back of Chisholm Hall. All items not picked up by Sunday afternoon will be donated to charity.

Contemplative Prayer meets each Monday.  We gather weekly in the Founders' Chapel from 5:30-7:30pm to worship God, using words, music, and our bodies.  Contemplative Prayer is a way of praying through listening, learning to go beyond words so that we can simply be present with God.  After an introduction to quiet prayer, we will sit in silence with each other and with God and then share a brief reflection on our prayer experience before finishing.

Summer Time is Prayer Time.   Join your St. John's friends and neighbors at 10am for coffee and prayer beginning this morning, 5/1.  We will meet together the first Thursday of each month May through August.  Bring your Adorations, Confessions, Thanksgivings, and Supplications.  We will be praying for St. John's Church, for Portsmouth and our businesses, our neighbors, friends and families.  Pray with a group or in the Founders' Chapel alone, as you prefer.  Open to all.  See you May 1.
