Tree of Life

Tree of Life and awesome mystery, in your death we are reborn.  This Tree, the Cross of Christ, is the ultimate sign of God's love for every man, woman, and child in the world.  It is God's lavish response to every person's cry for love.

In Jesus' great act of self-offering--vindicated by the Resurrection--pain, suffering, and even death becomes transformed.  That is why the cross is called the Tree of Life instead of the Tree of Death.  In times of trouble, when you have been betrayed, and when you are face to face with pain and adversity, look to the Tree of Life.  There Jesus is present with his love, to sustain you from the Cross with his transforming power in order that you might overcome the obstacles this sinful world has cast upon your path.

"Come unto me, all you who bear heavy burdens, and I will give you rest."  (Matthew 11:28)  What burden do you carry that needs to be given to your Lord who reigns from the Tree of Life?

J. Derek Harbin, rector

Sign up for Holy Week in Chisholm Hall

Holy Week is only two weeks away, so sign-up sheets are now posted in Chisholm Hall for:

  • Maundy Thursday Agape Meal (4/17 @ 6:30pm).  Help us get an accurate count!  (Want to help with this event?  Contact Della Stearns.)
  • Maundy Thursday Overnight Watch (4/17 & 4/18): Sign up in half hour increments to watch and wait with Jesus in the Garden.  (Want to help with this event?  Contact Donna Vick.)
  • Great Vigil of Easter Reception (4/19 following worship): sign up and tell us what favorite cocktail party appetizer you will bring (enough for your household plus more to share) (bring it on a special, beautiful plate or tray).  Come to the ultimate party of the year as we celebrate the Resurrection!  (Want to help with this reception?  Contact Carolyn Colon.)

Miscellany

Christian Formation for all ages continues this Sunday.

Shop at the African Team Ministries' Table this Sunday.  The support from your purchases allows African Team Ministries to provide school fees, tuition, books, and uniforms to students in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.  This support ensures that the children receive an education and an opportunity to learn of and deepen their relationship with Jesus.  Through their partner churches, your purchases will give the gift of hope!

Prayer List Reset this week.  One of the challenges of maintaining prayer lists is that names can unnecessarily remain on them longer than needed.  Each quarter we "reset" our prayer list by removing all names and requesting parishioners to submit names to repopulate the list.  Please contact this link if you would like a name added to the new list we begin using this week for the 2nd quarter of the year.

Easter Vigil and Easter Day Flowers: St. John's is accepting donations for flowers to decorate our worship space for Eastertide.  These flowers may be given in memory of, or in thanksgiving for, a loved one or a special event.  Forms are available in our worship space.  Please either mail your donation and form to the Parish Office or place both in a sealed envelope in the offering plate.  Please be sure to note "Easter flowers" on the check memo line.

The Parish Garden Workday has been rescheduled for this Sunday, April 6, following worship.  Come spend the afternoon in beautiful spring weather and help with cleaning up the church gardens.  Bring your leaf and garden rakes and your work gloves.  Several gas-powered trimmers are needed!  Children welcome - make it a family outing!

The Last Contemplative Prayer is 4/8: We gather every week to worship God, using words, music, and our bodies; Contemplative Prayer is a way of praying through listening, learning to go beyond words so that we can simply be present with God.  St. John's offers Contemplative Prayer this Lent on Tuesday nights at 6:30pm in the Founders' Chapel.  After an introduction to quiet prayer, we will sit in silence with each other and with God and then share a brief reflection on our prayer experience before finishing around 7:15.
