City Manager Shout Out!

As the snow began to melt last Friday from the snowstorm of the decade, we received this shout out from Portsmouth's City Manager: I especially thank you for being the host Church for our homeless brothers and sisters during this weather-challenged week.  You are a congregation that is full of compassion.  Thank you.  John Rowe

St. John's Shelter leaders Nancy Johnson & Claudia Tomlin added this "Amen" to the City Manager's words: The warmth of the Holy Spirit was at St. John's last week in our winter shelter.  We warmed both body and soul with winter clothes, long johns, hot food, and plenty of love.  This would not have been possible without our many volunteers.  We cannot thank you enough and are very appreciative of all the hard work and dedication each one of you gave to our homeless neighbors!   We all were truly blessed.

Tiffany window restoration underway

Restoration of the 1907 Tiffany altar window is about to begin, thanks to a generous financial gift to St. John's Church.   The scaffolding is up in the alley between Chisholm Hall and the outside of the altar window, but all that is visible from the Chisholm Hall window is the protective plastic sheeting.  E.T. Gresham's Museum and Historic Renovation Division, responsible for the recent restoration of historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, will remove the deteriorating protective panels, scrape, repair, and repaint all trim, clean the stained glass as recommended by the Stained Glass Association of America, install new ¼" clear lexan protective panels with stainless steel fasteners, and install four new adjustable LED light fixtures to properly illuminate the window under all lighting conditions.  We can hardly wait to see the final result this Easter!

2014 Women's Retreat

All  women of St. John's are invited to a special time of fellowship, encouragement and rest.  There is time to register for the AWE Retreat each Sunday in Chisholm Hall, until February 17, 2014. The cost of seminar and meals is $80.

Our speaker is Tracie Miles.  She is a member of the national speaker team with Proverbs 31 Ministries.  Her passion is to lead women closer to the heart of God, help them embrace their spiritual value and purpose and inspire them to live intentionally for Christ.  Tracie has been married to her husband, Michael, for 22 years.  They have three children and live in Charlotte, NC.  She graduated from the University of NC at Charlotte and worked in the corporate world for 15 years until God placed a call on her heart to focus on Christian speaking and writing.
