Shelter Week @ St. John's begins 1/26

St. John's Church will be sheltering the homeless once again Sunday evening (1/26/13) through Sunday morning (2/2/13).  Everyone's help is needed to provide a warm shelter and food for our homeless sisters and brothers.  Don't miss this incredible opportunity to meet Jesus face to face!

Registering volunteers (6:45-9pm)-Be the friendly face that greets everyone who comes to serve.  An accurate count of volunteer hours assists Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless to receive grants to continue this ministry.

Staying overnight (9pm-6:30am) - Like shepherds that watch over sheep, overnighters watch over our guests and tend to the needs of the group while everyone else sleeps in safety.  Not only can men serve in this capacity but since 25% of the guests are women, the need for women volunteers is also a priority.  Please consider this opportunity and if you don't feel that you can spend the entire night, maybe you can split the time with someone else

Servers (7-9pm) - Each night, hot meals are prepared for our guests.  It takes a lot of people to accomplish this task - cooks are in place but servers are needed nightly.  Anyone can be a waiter or waitress and you will be greatly rewarded!

Cleanup (6-8:30am) - Each morning after our guests leave, key areas of the building are cleaned and prepared to receive our guests once again.

Signup this Sunday in Chisholm Hall for one or more of these opportunities.  Let's show these neighbors the love and compassion that makes St. John's special!

Need more information?  Contact Nancy Johnson, Claudia Tomlin or Arlene Dragseth.

Long Undie Sunday, 1/19

St. John's winter sheltering is only ten days away, so it is time to begin to bring in gifts of long underwear for our homeless guests!  We will be collecting new, long underwear (tops and bottoms) on this Sunday.  Shelter Co-coordinator Nancy Johnson advises that Wal-mart has an economical product.

The weather is cold and the need is so great.  Let's be generous!

2014 Women's Retreat

Now is the time to Sign-Up for the AWE Ladies Retreat on February 21 and 22.  The conference, three meals and the speaker registration fee is $80.  You may pay with a check or a credit card at the desk in Chisholm Hall near the west exit.  Representatives of St. John's Women's Ministry (AWE) will be available after each worship service to assist you.

To reserve a room at the Hilton Virginia Beach, please call the reservations line (757.213.3000) and tell them you are with St. John's Church to receive the special rate.

The special rate of $99 is only guaranteed thru Monday, January 27.  We encourage all ladies planning to attend the conference to reserve their room, even if they have not had a chance to pay the conference fee of $80.  Invite your neighbor, your friend, or your daughter to share a room Friday night for $99.

Honoring St. Paul's School.  On Saturday, January 25, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. the Olde Towne Foundation will have a dedication and unveiling of a bronze plaque honoring the history of St. Paul's School.  The dedication will take place at 441 Washington Street, the site of this historic structure.  St. Paul's School was in existence from 1891-1991 and over 13,000 students graduated and went on to enrich their lives and the quality of life in Portsmouth.

Sign up to prepare a meal for this year's Pilgrims in Christ group using the sheet posted in Chisholm Hall.  Use your gifts of hospitality while you fulfill your baptismal promise to "do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ."
