For all the Saints

As Christian saints, we are never alone.  Jesus has promised to be with us through the power of God's Holy Spirit.   We are also never alone because Jesus' presence is made present to us through Sacrament, scripture, and Christian community that sustains and encourages us here on earth.

Ask for the prayers of your Christian sisters and brothers.  Remember also that prayer is not limited to those who are still alive on earth.  Christians who have passed through death into eternity stand ready to pray in the presence of the exalted Jesus for us.  These saints don't act like telephone operators to make a divine connection possible between earth and heaven.  Jesus, through his death and resurrection, has already insured that that line will always be open.  Instead, think of them as advocates, who call on that same phone line to Jesus asking for God's strength and blessing upon us.

Described below are a number of wonderful opportunities to engage in the mystery of what it means to be a saint of God.  Learn the stories of saints past at the Naval Hospital Cemetery tour on 10/30.  Participate in a special diocesan reconciliation liturgy on 11/2 (All Souls Day).  Bring photographic memories with you or carry a banner for our All Saints Sunday celebrations on 11/3.  Be thankful that in Jesus we are one with that great cloud of witnesses!

Naval Hospital Cemetery Tour, 10/30

Al Cutchin, the Naval Hospital historian who conducted the fantastic hospital tour during the Chisholm weekend festivities, will conduct his annual Naval Hospital cemetery tour on Wednesday October 30, 2013 @ 3:30pm.  Allow yourself plenty of time to get through the guard gate (you will need a valid driver's license) and meet Al at the cemetery entrance by the starting time.

Repairing the Breach on All Souls Day, 11/2

A Diocesan Service of Repentance, Reconciliation & Healing for the sin of racism will be held on All Souls Day (Saturday, November 2) at 11am at Christ & St. Luke's Episcopal Church (560 W Olney Rd) in Norfolk.  Bishop Hollerith will preside with Canon Stephanie Spellers (a priest from the Diocese of Long Island and chaplain to the Episcopal Church's House of Bishops) as preacher.

This liturgy does not point fingers or assign blame.  Instead it provides an opportunity for the church to recognize the times when we have fallen short in recognizing all those created in God's image.  St. John's own Lena Simmons and Dave Wiley are singing in the diocesan choir and vestry member/kitchen manager Rick Bishop will assist in leading prayers for this event.

As your rector, I will be attending for Marion, William Henry, and all those who followed them at St. John's Church.  Their names appear on the first page of our original parish register, noting that these "colored" were baptized on June 10, 1851.  Their parents are listed as Willis and Ann (colored) and their godmother was Milly (colored).  No last names are given for them or for any others of African descent who were baptized or married in our church during the 19th century.  These saints of God are lost in history, known to God alone.

I can't change the past, but I can acknowledge it.  I can be a part of repairing the breach.  Won't you join me and others from our parish at this diocesan service of repentance and reconciliation on All Souls Day?

 J. Derek Harbin, rector

Carry a banner for the Departed on 11/3

During worship on All Saints Sunday (November 3), we will remember those who have died and gone to God's heavenly feast since last year's All Saints celebration.  Thanks to the talents of Mary Colby, worshippers at St. John's historically join the procession while carrying banners bearing the names of departed loved ones, reminding us that they are indeed "Christ's Own Forever."  If you have had a relative die since last November, please contact the Parish Office by this Sunday (October 27) so that you can learn how to prepare your loved one's banner for this special day.

Bring pictures of your saints past on 11/3

Scripture tells us that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us.  Bring the photographs of the past saints who have made a difference in your life (framed or unframed) and help us surround our worship space the earthly images of those who are now in the presence of Jesus.
