Tea Party Food for Chisholm Celebration, 9/15
Hold the Date! On 9/15 we will celebrate James Chisholm, first rector of St. John's, who has been added to the Episcopal Church's calendar of saints for giving his life in service of others during the 1855 Yellow Fever Epidemic. Join members of the wider Portsmouth community at 3pm in Cedar Grove Cemetery as we dedicate a new bronze plaque at his grave and enjoy some light refreshments.
Would you please sign up via email or in the Parish Hall to bring some party finger food? If everyone participates, we'll have enough food for our guests. We're going for 1855-era food; please bring a recipe or a couple of dozen of one of the following choices: Sugar Cookies; Applesauce Cookies (recipe supplied); Lemon Squares; Cucumber Sandwiches; Egg Salad Sandwiches; Pimento Cheese Sandwiches; Chicken Salad Sandwiches. Please bring to church on the morning of 9/15. Questions? Want to sign up via email? Please contact Katherine Gray or Stephanie Ryder.

Miscellany
Thank you! The school supplies that were collected and blessed during Sunday's Blessing of the Backpacks were taken to Oasis where they will be given to those in need. Thank you for your generous participation in this effort to serve our community!
Christian Formation Resumes for adults and children on 9/8. A new offering this fall will be the Atrium of the Good Shepherd for those toilet trained children who will be 3,4 or 5 by 12/31. This new Christian Formation process, the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, is based on the child's developmental needs for their religious and spiritual abilities. Using New Testament stories and presenting vocabulary about how we worship, the child is exposed to a new meditative and contemplative way to interact with Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Be looking in your email for your child's individual orientation session invitation!
Safe Church Training at Grace Church in Norfolk on 9/21. The adult abuse prevention module is recommended for all vestry members, church employees and licensed Eucharistic Visitors. Any parishioners, volunteers, clergy and staff who work with children are requested to complete the child abuse prevention module. The adult module will be offered from 8:45am-noon and the child module will be offered from 12:30-2:30pm. Lunch will be offered for those who register for both modules. Click here to register.
Are you inspired by James Chisholm's dedication to serving the community during the 1855 yellow fever epidemic? Do you want to be a part of something that really makes a difference in this community in our own day? St. John's plans to celebrate "A Day to Shine" as part of next year's 2014 Chisholm festivities. We want your ideas! Join in the planning at one of two organizational meetings on Wednesday, September 11th, either at noon or at 5:00pm. Contact Jen Morrison for more information.
