Flower Guild Start-up

Tiger lily

Any man, woman or child interested in arranging flowers for the church and altar, please come this Saturday, July 27 for an organizational meeting in the Parish Hall at 10am.  No experience needed!  Local expert Margaret Webster will be here to give us advice on how to begin a flower team, and we will learn together as we arrange flowers for the altar on Sunday.  For more information, contact Sue Fritz or Margaret Perkins.

Choir Forming for Service of Reconciliation & RepentanceThe e

Last February, the Annual Council of our Diocese passed a resolution to hold a Service of Repentance and Reconciliation for the sin of racism. This service will be held at Christ and St. Luke's, Norfolk, on the Feast of All Souls, Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. A diocesan-wide choir will be formed for the service.

The choir will be open to all singers who wish to participate. There will be two rehearsals held at Christ and St. Luke's in Norfolk (Saturdays, 10/19 & 10/26 from 10:30am to noon).

The warm-up on the day of the service (November 2) will be at 10am.

The repertoire for the service (two choral anthems) will be chosen shortly and sent out in September. There will be no audition for the choir, but it comes with the understanding that singers will prepare the music before the rehearsals.

If you are interested in being part of this special event, please email Kevin Kwan at Christ and St. Luke's.  Please include your name, parish and voice part.

Downtown Tunnel Closing on Weekends

The I-264 Downtown Tunnel Rehabilitation work will begin in August.  Alternate routes will be needed for some of us to get to church on Sundays!

Starting Friday, August 9, the westbound lanes of Interstate 264 through the Downtown Tunnel West (from Norfolk to Portsmouth) will be closed on weekends, except holiday weekends, through the Spring of 2014.  Some weeknight closures will begin on August 5.

Miscellany

Save the date.  The blessing of the backpacks will be on Sunday, August 25.  Begin the new school year with some divine intervention!

Fr. Derek's Adult Forum ends this Sunday as we finish our exploration of congregational size dynamics.

Sister Heather Rollins will offer an intergenerational Sunday Forum for adults and children on hymn texts beginning Sunday, August 4.

Classical Pianist Robert Buxton will offer a free recital at Olde Towne's Monumental United Methodist Church on Sunday, August 11 @ 2pm.  Mr. Buxton will play selections by Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin and Grieg.   His concert is dedicated to his grandparents, the late Dr. Samuel E. Buxton, Jr. and Louise Pope Buxton, who were married at St. John's Church on September 7, 1946 by Fr. Jackson.  Mrs. Buxton was confirmed at St. John's by Bishop Brown before becoming affiliated with Monumental United Methodist Church.

Women's Summer Book Study.  Join women from our parish this summer as they read The New York Times best seller, Unglued, by Lysa Terkeurst, a Proverbs 31 ministry leader and author.  Books will be available for sale this Sunday before and after Adult Forum for $9 each.  Contact Margaret Perkins or Doreen Sheler for more information.
