by Maggie Nelson (See upcoming author event below!)
[Non-Fiction]

A genre-bending memoir, a work of "autotheory" offering fresh, fierce, and timely thinking about desire, identity, and the limitations and possibilities of love and language. At its center is a romance: the story of the author's relationship with the artist Harry Dodge. This story, which includes Nelson's account of falling in love with Dodge, who is fluidly gendered, as well as her journey to and through a pregnancy, offers a firsthand account of the complexities and joys of (queer) family-making. Nelson's insistence on radical individual freedom and the value of caretaking becomes the rallying cry of this thoughtful, unabashed, uncompromising book.

"Barbara Parker of 1960s Blackpool is a big fish in a small pond beautiful, astute, and with aspirations of making it in television like her idol Lucille Ball. Upon moving to London, Barbara changes her name to Sophie and gets her big break. She walks in to an audition she's not suited for and leaves with the writers excited to pen a show specifically for her. The majority of Hornby's clever novel follows Sophie and her creative circle of friends through the success of the subsequent program on BBC. . ." - Publishers Weekly

[Non-Fiction]

"Gordon infuses literary history with electrifying discoveries in this symbiotic portrait of radical mother-daughter writers who indelibly changed society and the arts. Mary Wollstonecraft, the author of the scandalous and transformative A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), died soon after giving birth to a sickly baby girl. . .[who] wrote the still-reverberating masterpiece, Frankenstein. . .[Gordon] traces each woman's struggle against poverty, viciously abusive sexism, [and] agonizing familial and romantic relationships. . .[and] delivers overdue justice to two heretofore shallowly perceived yet deeply moral thinkers and writers who risked everything to protest in word and deed crimes and discrimination against women." - Booklist, Starred Review

A single freelance book editor in NYC, Hodgman finds it easy to take his work and head home to be a caregiver. Once he arrives, however, he discovers nothing is easy -- not helping his mother navigate dressing, cooking, and a disappearing memory; not facing his past as a gay child and young adult in a small town; not deciphering love, parental and otherwise. . .A tender, resolute look at a place, literal and figurative, baby boomers might find themselves." - Booklist

In post-Arthurian Britain, the wars that once raged between the Saxons and the Britons have finally ceased. Axl and Beatrice, an elderly British couple, set off to visit their son, whom they haven't seen in years. And, because a strange mist has caused mass amnesia throughout the land, they can scarcely remember anything about him. As they are joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and an illustrious knight, Axl and Beatrice slowly begin to remember the dark and troubled past they all share. By turns savage, suspenseful, and intensely moving, The Buried Giant is a luminous meditation on the act of forgetting and the power of memory.
