[Fiction]
"Friendless 17-year-old Flora is desperately anxious to leave her remote, thinly populated Scottish island of Bancree when new people -- a father (John) and his daughter (Ailsa) -- arrive and move into an abandoned, tumbledown cottage. The two girls quickly become friends, but as Flora undertakes research for a school paper on selkies -- legendary women and men who can transform into seals and back again -- she begins to wonder about her new friend's true identity. In the meantime, men from the island begin disappearing, and the police, presuming foul play, make Ailsa's father a prime suspect. . ." - Booklist

by Stewart O'Nan
[Fiction]
"It would appear to be a daunting task to write a biographical novel of one of our most iconic writers, yet O'Nan avoids every pitfall. Focusing on the last years of F. Scott Fitzgerald's life, when he was depleted both mentally and physically from overwork and too much drink, [O'Nan] renders a heartbreaking portrait of an artist soldiering on in the face of personal and professional ruin. Ensconced at the Garden of Allah complex in Hollywood. . .Fitzgerald is relegated to rewriting B-movie scripts. . .O'Nan's convincing characterization [is] a moving testament to grace under pressure and an intimate look at a legend." - Booklist, Starred Review

Join Mica as she leads our January reading group with A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, an international bestselling novel.
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon -- the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? When one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

They share many happy hours until becoming separated accidentally, and the book joins the other forgotten books in the library basement. However, the pair reunite happily at the library book sale, going on to share the book's tale together again. [Fiction]
I revisited Wilder's series, a favorite from my childhood, after having my own child. I wasn't sure that it would resonate with him (a more rambunctious child than I was) as much as it did with me. My memories of the tale were primarily of the perfect and simple language that conveyed the coziness and warmth of Wilder's loving family and pioneering life. So when I started reading it as a bedtime book to my son, it was a pleasant surprise to see that Little House in the Big Woods not only tells the story of Laura's days as a 4-year old living in a cabin in the woods, but includes thrilling tales of her Pa's childhood, as he regales his daughters with adventurous (yet child-appropriate) anecdotes of panther chases and wild pigs. Garth Williams' lovely pencil illustrations adorn almost every page, making it especially friendly to younger children.
