Season's greetings, Readers,

We're halfway through December now...do you have your holiday shopping underway? Books are the gifts that keep on giving, and we have plenty of gift items to suit your wishlist fulfillment.

We also encourage you to give to a cause this year! Support a local community organization by donating to Jackson Street Youth Shelter, and stop in the bookstore to see our giving tree (see below for more details on how you can help).

New releases in books will return next week, as publishers wind down toward the end of the year, so now's the time to take a look back at the best reads of 2015. We hope you've been enjoying browsing our special gift newsletters -- look for our non-fiction edition soon!

Grass Roots "giving tree"

Please join Grass Roots in giving back this holiday season! We are proud to continuously support Jackson Street Youth Services throughout the year with book donations, but it's gotten us thinking about what else we can do. This year, we'd like your help in supporting the local organization.

Because the needs of the vulnerable youth Jackson Street serves go beyond books, we are hosting a "giving tree" in the store. These wishlist items will help program staff better serve our community's homeless and at-risk youth. We're inviting you to pick a tag for a needed item off of the tree and return it, unwrapped and with the tag attached, to our store, or deliver it directly to Jackson Street's 24/7 shelter. The Corvallis House is located at 555 NW Jackson Ave. Thank you, and happy holidays!

For more information on the organization, visit the Jackson Street Youth Services website.

Patterson launched the program to thank booksellers "for their dedication to spreading the joy of reading." The list of recipients includes Neé representing Grass Roots Books among other independent bookstores across the country. Congratulations, Neé -- you're a winner in our book!

by Fredrik Backman
Tuesday, January 5, at 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Join Mica as she leads our January reading group with A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, an international bestselling novel.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon -- the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? When one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Marissa
[Non-Fiction]

An ideal gift for history buffs, particularly readers of classical studies, this comprehensive and fascinatingly insightful journey into the culture and mythology of ancient Rome is one of my favorite non-fiction books released this year. Beard is a scholar of the finest caliber, and with her meticulous research not only covers the fine points of Roman history -- the fall of the Republic, the assassination of Cicero, Romulus and Remus -- but also digs further into the lives of Rome's populace, and challenges many of our preconceived notions of Roman society, politics, and events.

Linda
[Non-Fiction]

This excellent little book is perfectly designed for the new "birders" -- those who love the sounds of the birds around us, and wonder at their beauty, but are not sure which is the best way to get to know them. Swick teaches how to identify what we see, how to recognize the different birds, and how to understand the ways books are set up for identification. The book also has great ideas for attracting birds to our backyards, and how to set out on a birding expedition. This is a lovely book, packed with information!
