[Fiction]

When Mrs. A. first enters the narrator's home, his wife, Nora, is experiencing a difficult pregnancy. First as their maid and nanny, then their confidante, this older woman begins to help her employers negotiate married life, quickly becoming the glue in their small household. She is the steady, maternal influence for both husband and wife, and their son, Emanuele, whom she protects from his parents' expectations and disappointments. But the family's delicate fabric comes undone when Mrs. A. is diagnosed with cancer. Moving seamlessly between the past and present, Giordano highlights with remarkable precision the joy of youth and the fleeting nature of time.

"Gerontologist Pillemer shares findings from his survey of 700 people in 'very long marriages' (the shortest here have lasted three decades, the longest, more than five) for tips on maintaining successful long-term relationships. The respondents, charmingly called 'the experts' by Pillemer, share 'storehouses of invaluable lived experience' on areas including questions to ask yourself before settling down, domestic violence, and late-in-life sex. . . The benefits of such a comprehensive study incorporating so many years of experience should be ample, for newlyweds and contemporaries of the respondents alike. The advice is astute, fresh, and well selected by Pillemer." - Publishers Weekly

"Iconic musician Young follows up his well-received Waging Heavy Peace with another rambling, charmingly unconventional memoir, but this time the rocker-turned-author gives his book a little bit of structure. . . Young uses his love of cars, especially vintage American models, as a launching pad for reminiscences of crisscrossing Canada and America alone or with various bands, stories of his pre-Buffalo Springfield groups struggling to find success in the Toronto and Winnipeg 1960s rock scenes, eulogies to friends and bandmates, and declarations of love for his wife and children, offering personal and professional insight that is sure to delight fans. . ." - Library Journal

What are Bargain Books, and where can I find them?

This week, a message from the owner, Jack!:

We have been very fortunate to locate a source of NEW books that publishers have chosen to make available at dramatic discounts. But there are often only a very limited number of copies, so we go through the daily lists each evening to make sure we are getting the pick of the titles -- before the rest of the country even knows about them! And we can sell them for approximately one-half of the original price!

We are very careful in our selections, only buying authors, titles and publishers that we know and can guarantee. This allows us to significantly increase our offerings and depth of sections. We're primarily focusing on "everything literate," plus unique titles in non-fiction (especially science and history), arts & crafts, puzzles, the arts, and children's -- including award-winning illustrators and authors plus quality books on diversity, ethnic tales, Spanish language. It is our hope that this will allow children to never be denied a good book because of price!

Because our selections have overflowed our tables, we are now putting our recent arrivals on the tables just inside the front of our annex. We also shelve them based on genre, adding a BIG GREEN "B" to the spine so you can easily find them when browsing your favorite sections. Plus, we're always happy to show you our favorites. We will be developing handouts of some of our more exceptional and unique titles. Please look for them in our store and on our website.
