Good afternoon, Readers,

Author events are coming your way next week! Stop by Grass Roots to enjoy two readings by Derek Diedricksen and Kim Heacox -- details under events(New bargain books are also coming next week...check back soon!)

The annual Best American series have arrived in the store, with genres including short stories, mystery, and science and nature writing. Speaking of genres, we're excited to bring you a new and improved fiction browsing experience with subject bookmarks! You'll be able to designate subjects of fiction titles -- like magical realism, cultural heritages, romance, etc. -- at a glance.

Fantasy spinoffs and reimaginings for kids and adults alike seem to be the order of the week. On our shelves now: A "prequel" of sorts to the world of Game of Thrones; a Twilight tenth anniversary "dual edition"; the first in a new series by Rick Riordan; and (be still my muggle heart!) a gorgeously illustrated full-color re-release of  Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone: a magical gift for the holiday season.

Have a great weekend,

Marissa

by Ben S. Bernanke
[Non-Fiction]

In 2006, Ben S. Bernanke was appointed chair of the Federal Reserve, but there would be no time to celebrate. The bursting of a housing bubble in 2007 exposed the hidden vulnerabilities of the global financial system, bringing it to the brink of meltdown. From the implosion of the investment bank Bear Stearns to the unprecedented bailout of insurance giant AIG, efforts to arrest the financial contagion consumed Bernanke and his team at the Fed around the clock. Rich with detail of the decision-making process in Washington, Bernanke recounts and explains the worst financial crisis and economic slump in America since the Great Depression.

[Fiction]

"In her gorgeously written novel of ambition, courage, retribution, and triumph, Brooks imagines the life and character of King David in all his complexity, from his humble childhood through old age. A brilliant harpist and singer with immense charisma, this man beloved by the Lord is also a fearsome warrior who ruthlessly pursues his vision of power. Natan, David's longtime counselor and prophet, proves a shrewd chronicler for his tale. . . The plot ranges back and forth in time, [reminiscing] about his years of service, and [observing] David's passion for the beautiful, married Batsheva and its consequences. . ." - Booklist, Starred Review

[Fiction]

Taking place nearly a century before the events of A Game of Thrones, these never-before-collected adventures recount an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne. A young, naive but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two. . .as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits.

edited by Lorrie Moore
[Fiction]

The Best American Short Stories is the longest running and best-selling series of short fiction in the country. For the centennial celebration of this beloved annual series, master of the form Lorrie Moore selects 40 stories from the more than two thousand that were published in previous editions. Series editor Heidi Pitlor recounts behind-the-scenes anecdotes and examines, decade by decade, the trends captured over a hundred years. Together, the stories and commentary offer an extraordinary guided tour through a century of literature with what Moore calls all its wildnesses of character and voice. These 40 stories represent their eras but also stand the test of time.

"Dodson's debut is a creatively illustrated tale of letters lost and found. . .After a vague catastrophe called the Collapse decimates the United States, the survivors take refuge in seven city-states across the country and establish a totalitarian new regime. Citizens are grouped according to their lifephase, all conversations are recorded and stored in the Vault, and the country is run by a bloodline of seven senators. When one such senator dies, he bequeaths a sealed letter to his grandson, Zeke Thomas, which could cast doubt on the family's lineage and prevent him from eventually assuming power. . ." - Publishers Weekly

[Fiction]

"Why do pirates appeal? Because, as 14-year-old Gwen Needle puts it, when you're a pirate, you can 'go anyplace' and 'do whatever you want.' Compelling ideas to Gwen and her friend Amber, whose supervised lives (Gwen is not even allowed to take the bus alone) are the opposite of pirate freedom. The pirate lore comes from Amber's grandfather, Errol, who's just as trapped, in his case by Alzheimer's and an old-age home he loathes. While Gwen and Amber visit Errol and plot kidnap and ruin together, Gwen's father, Phil, tries to make it big in radio, which might be consolation for a wife who doesn't like him much, a house he can't afford, and a very angry daughter. . ." - Publishers Weekly

[Fiction]

". . . In alternating chapters, Gibson tells the stories of Flynne Fisher, master gamer in the near future, and Wilf Netherton, London publicist in a more distant future. In the intervening years, a series of catastrophic events resulting from climate change and known as the jackpot has killed off 80 percent of the population yet somehow allowed the survivors to unleash incredible new technologies, such as nanobots known as assemblers, to help rebuild society. Somewhere in all of this, the ability to communicate with the past (quantum tunneling) has become a vogue among continua enthusiasts who fiddle with the past as a hobby, sometimes with dire consequences. . ." - Booklist

by S.C. Gwynne
[Non-Fiction]

"Dispensing with a chronological march through the life of Confederate General Thomas Jackson, Gwynne presents Jackson's eccentric personality in biographical episodes that he injects into the arc of Jackson's Civil War campaigns and battles. For example, the book covers the future hero's boyhood and his 1850s tenure at the Virginia Military Institute (a rich source of anecdotes of Jackson's oddities) after the 1861 Battle of Bull Run. Gwynne's technique succeeds, thanks to his spry prose and cogent insight, in revealing Jackson's character. Describing him as shy, serious, determined, and profoundly religious, Gwynne captures the stiff, asocial persona Jackson presented to the world. . ." - Booklist, Starred Review

Join Kerry as she leads our November Reading Group with Dissident Gardens by Jonathan Letham, winning author of the National Book Critics Circle Award and MacArthur Fellowship.

Rose Zimmer, the aptly nicknamed Red Queen of Sunnyside, Queens, is an unreconstructed Communist who savages neighbors, family, and political comrades with the ferocity of her personality and the absolutism of her beliefs. Her equally passionate and willful daughter, Miriam, flees Rose's influence for the dawning counterculture of Greenwich Village. Despite their differences, they share a power to enchant the men in their lives, including Rose's aristocratic German Jewish husband, Albert; her feckless chess hustler cousin, Lenny; and Miriam's (slightly fraudulent) Irish folksinger husband, Tommy Gogan. Through Lethem's vivid storytelling we come to understand that the personal may be political, but the political, even more so, is personal.
