[Non-Fiction]

Waking Up is for the 20 percent of Americans who follow no religion but who suspect that important truths can be found in the experiences of such figures as Jesus, the Buddha, Lao Tzu, Rumi, and the other saints and sages of history. Throughout this book, neuroscientist Harris argues that there is more to understanding reality than science and secular culture generally allow, and that how we pay attention to the present moment largely determines the quality of our lives. Waking Up is part memoir and part exploration of the scientific underpinnings of spirituality.

by Martin Windrow
[Non-Fiction]

Martin Windrow was a war historian with little experience with pets when he adopted an owl the size of a corncob. Adorable but with knife-sharp talons, Mumble became Windrow's closest, if at times unpredictable, companion, first in a South London flat and later in the more owl-friendly Sussex countryside. Windrow recalls with wry humor their finer moments as well as the reactions of incredulous neighbors and the awkwardness of buying Mumble unskinned rabbit at Harrods Food Hall, offering a poignant and unforgettable reminiscence of his charmed years with his improbable pet, as well as an unexpected education in the paleontology, zoology, and sociology of owls.

They were perhaps the most photographed and talked about young royals of the early twentieth century. Over the years, the story of the four captivating Russian Grand Duchesses -- Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia Romanov -- and their tragic end in a basement at Ekaterinburg in 1918 has clouded our view of them. With this treasure trove of diaries and letters, we learn that they were intelligent, sensitive and perceptive witnesses to the dark turmoil within their immediate family and the ominous approach of the Russian Revolution, the nightmare that would sweep their world away, and them along with it.

Over the years Eileen encourages her husband to want more: a better job, better friends, a better house. "Toibin's 10th novel offers a compelling portrait of an Irish woman for whom fate has prescribed loneliness. Widowed at 40, with four children and shaky finances, Nora rejects condolences and pity. She is so intent on making her children's lives normal that she ignores their need to mourn as well. In the wake of her husband's terminal illness, she instills fear and bewilderment in her two younger boys; they have nightmares, and one begins to stutter. The two girls, away at school, are resentful as well. Nora is sometimes obtuse about the choices she makes. She is short-tempered and sharp-tongued, and she makes significant mistakes but her frailties make her an appealing character. . ." - Publishers Weekly

Evelyn Hess

Thursday, July 9, at 7:00 p.m.
Grass Roots Books & Music
227 SW 2nd St.
Corvallis, OR

For 15 years, Evelyn Hess and her husband David lived in a tent and trailer, without electricity or running water, on 20 acres of wild land in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range. When they decided to build a house -- a real house at last -- they knew it would have to respect the lessons of simple living that they learned in their camping life. They knew they could not do it alone. Building a Better Nest chronicles their adventures as they begin to construct a house of their own, seeking a model for sustainable living not just in their home, but beyond its walls.

Evelyn Searle Hess lives in the foothills of southern Oregon's Coast Range. She currently weeds, writes, and tries to put up her garden produce before the critters get it. In spare moments she helps husband David with their life project, building a house. Hess's previous book To the Woods won the 2011 WILLA Literary Award for Best Creative Nonfiction.

Darkside Show Times for 6/19-6/25

-When Marnie Was Here
-PG To those film lovers attuned to quiet moments and emotional nuance, this film has a shine all its own. The old-school hand-drawn animation celebrates sweeping landscapes but also the telling detail, revealing character through spare gestures.

-Hungry Hearts -NR A robust thriller with a questionable, although intriguing, commentary on motherhood and mental illness.

-Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
-PG The audience for whom this sequel is targeted will enjoy the predictability of a well-executed sequel. Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith.

-Ex Machina
-R This intelligent examination of our fascination with science is impeccably realized, despite a modest budget. Ex Machina spans sci-fi philosophy and a romantic triangle, but ultimately it's a horror movie where the monsters are men.

-100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared -R Eccentric, wry, and highly entertaining.

At the Hearth of the Crossed Races: A French-Indian Community in Nineteenth-Century Oregon, 1812-1859

Saturday, July 11, at 1:30 p.m.

Benton County Museum, Moreland Auditorium

1101 Main Street, Philomath, OR

Despite the force of Oregon's founding mythology, the Willamette Valley was not an empty Eden awaiting settlement by hardy American pioneers. Rather, it was, as Jetté explores, one of the earliest sites of extensive intercultural contact in the Pacific Northwest: French Prairie, so named for the French-Indian families who resettled the homeland of the Ahantchuyuk Kalapuyans, provides a window into the multi-racial history of the Pacific Northwest and a community that challenged notions of white supremacy, racial separation, and social exclusion.

Margaret Grundstein reading recap

Margaret Grundstein gave a very dynamic reading at the store this week from her memoir, Naked in the Woods: My Unexpected Years in a Hippie Commune, published by OSU Press. She captivated the audience with her story of living on a commune near Eugene. We had a fun discussion delving into the motivations behind joining a commune and how different the political atmosphere was then and now -- and how important it became to learn to change oneself, rather than forcing other people to change.

This event was the second to last in our OSU Press author series (the last is Evelyn Hess on July 9th!).
Walter Scott Prize

John Spurling won the £25,000 (about $38,900) Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction for The Ten Thousand Thingswhich the judges described as "subtle and rewarding. Through John Spurling's writing you feel as though you are reading Wang Meng's paintings as he created them. It is a mesmerising, elegantly drawn picture of old imperial China, which feels remarkably modern." The novel was rejected 44 times before being published.

Night StandsNightStands

I absolutely love this book. It is my favorite non-fiction read in quite some time. Let me start by saying this isn't a book written to defame meat lovers or bring guilt. That's not its agenda; it is simply the facts about an under-appreciated animal. The pig has a 10,000 year old history of feeding an entire world and yet it is still a devalued beast. In an attempt to set the record straight, the author reveals the astonishing natural and cultural history of this barnyard constant. I promise, after reading this book, you'll want a Wilbur to call your own.

Marissa

by Naomi Novik
[Fiction]

Perhaps the most compelling beginning to a fantasy series I've read since Name of the Wind, Uprooted is a satisfyingly new take on Polish folktales, with its progressive, realistic heroine Agnieszka, whose talent for spell-casting lands her in the company of the Dragon, a powerful -- and abrasive -- immortal wizard. But they must work together to confront the terrifying evil corruption of the perilous Wood. Darkly enchanting, emotionally resonant, and addicting in all the best ways, this is the kind of story that will stand up to many rereads. I was pulled into its world -- and so was Neé!

by Mary Norris
[Non-Fiction]

For more than 30 years, Mary Norris has worked in the copy department of the New Yorker Magazine. In this delightful little book, she shares some of her many moments there. Her incredible wit kept me well-engaged, and the full chapters into the intricacies of editing, good writing, pencils, and "you and me" (as opposed to the incorrect "you and I") are both entertaining and very informative. This is an excellent book for those of us who love to write, and who wish to write well and correctly. Or it is the perfect book for the daughter of an editor!
