by Richard McGuire
[Fiction]

"Expanding on an influential piece that first appeared in 'Raw' in 1989, McGuire, best known for his illustrated children's books, explores a single patch of land (apparently in Perth Amboy, N.J.) over the course of millions of years. As in the earlier version, McGuire's perspective is fixed in what is (for most of the book) the corner of a family room, even as the narrative skips across centuries. At the beginning and end, dinosaurs and futuristic animals (respectively) stalk pages unadorned by people. But throughout most of the book, the reader sees human families dance, die, celebrate, fracture, and just live. . ."  -Publishers Weekly

"After a long career of summarizing the events and views of others, in the 1960s and 1970s, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Durant (The Story of Philosophy; The Story of Civilization) set out to document his views on the most important topics of human existence. Now, over three decades later, the manuscript of his efforts has come to light and is offered to readers who may remember fondly his works from earlier days. In 22 brief essays on everything from youth to old age, politics, Vietnam, art, education, and the lessons of history, Durant (1885-1981) expresses his attitudes and thoughtful opinions with grace and occasionally with wisdom..." -Library Journal

by Anita Diamant
[Fiction]

"Bestseller Diamant (The Red Tent) tells a gripping story of a young Jewish woman growing up in early-20th-century Boston. Addie Baum, an octogenarian grandmother in 1985, relates long-ago history to a beloved granddaughter, answering the question: 'How did I get to be the woman I am today?' The answer: by living a fascinating life. First reminiscing about 1915 and the reading club she became a part of as a teenager, Addie, in a conversational tone, recounts the lifelong friendships that began at club meetings and days by the seaside at nearby Rockport. . ." -Publishers Weekly

"If you don't believe that mathematics can be fun you should read this book. Parker, a mathematician and stand up comic, takes the reader on an entertaining voyage through many recreational topics. These include some more or less familiar aspects of number theory but also polygonal numbers, packing problems, graph theory, and computer logic and algorithms. The fascinating excursions into geometry and topology including discussions of noncircular wheels, knot theory, and the geometry of four-dimensional objects are especially noteworthy. Throughout the text, subjects are enhanced by clever problems that immediately grab one's attention. . ." -Library Journal

A Perfectly Messed-Up Story
by Patrick McDonnell
[Fiction]
Ages 4 to 8

"Beloved Mutts comic-strip illustrator McDonnell brings children a story about how even the most perfect things can sometimes become...well, messed up. Louie sets out to tell his happy tale about skipping and singing when suddenly a jelly blob interrupts his cheerful narrative. This is soon followed by a peanut butter ('AUGH! The chunky kind!') mess. Louie is horrified that someone would treat his story so carelessly. As the mess builds, Louie becomes more and more anxious, until a really big mess causes him to give up. . . .He soon learns a wise lesson; it is the story that makes the book, not the mess. . . ." -School Library Journal

Falling from Horses
by Molly Gloss
[Fiction]

This novel (which sometimes reads like a memoir) is set in 1938, and follows a thread from her earlier novel, The Hearts of Horses. In this story, Bud Frazer, a young ranch hand, leaves his home and a family tragedy in eastern Oregon and heads to Hollywood to pursue a career in movie stunt riding. On the bus ride going down he meets Lily Shaw, who is also headed there to become a screen writer. As they struggle and try to make their way in that business, they forge a friendship that will last a lifetime. I loved the writing, with the northwest and Hollywood themes. It was a real eye opener and I blanched to read about the grittier and often horrifying aspects of the cowboy opera movie business, but it is a really good story with totally believable characters. This is another great novel by Gloss!

(GLOSS is the best-selling author The Hearts of Horses, The Jump-Off Creek, winner of both the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award and the Oregon Book Award, The Dazzle of Day, winner of the PEN Center West Fiction Prize, and Wild Life, winner of the James Tiptree Jr. Award.)

Suspicious Minds: How Culture Shapes Madness
by Joel and Ian Gold
[Non-Fiction]

This book is fascinating in its historical and current teachings of psychosis in the modern age. What I found most surprising is how little scientists and psychologists know about the contributing factors that cause delusions to form. Brothers Joel and Ian Gold (associate professors, respectively, at the NYU School of Medicine and McGill University) take turns discussing past and present studies in psychology to build up to the argument that delusion is a product of modern culture with its increase in technology and social responsibilities. They discuss at length what they call the Truman Show delusion, something increasingly more common as reality TV and the Internet become more prevalent in our everyday lives.

Kin
by Larkin Poe
[CD]

Kin by Larkin Poe is one of my top albums for the year! This talented sister duo is a fresh and invigorating punch to Americana music. This CD is packed full of surprising elements, too: pop, hip hop, and blues. Their harmonizing is angelic and their chosen vocal inflections are full of attitude and emotion. Also, the production took care not to hide the background vocals, but pull up a seat for them at the table, making for a full-bodied, cacophonous sound. I recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys an earful of music!

Nora Webster
by Colm Toibin
[Fiction]

We enter Nora Webster's life just following the loss of her husband. People come calling to her, out of respect for the grieving widow, and as these people reach out to her, either out of friendship, duty, curiosity, or family obligation, we learn to know Nora through her reactions to them. With keen insight into the life of someone grieving, Toibin delicately masks the weight and horror of grief behind the tasks of everyday life. I was struck by the sudden bursts of insight Nora has, beautifully expressed, behind her grief. Toibin writes this truth so well.
