The Museum of Extraordinary Things

Alice Hoffman

Alice Hoffman's The Museum of Extraordinary Things is the story of an electric and impassioned love between two vastly different souls in New York during the volatile first decades of the twentieth century. Coralie Sardie is the daughter of the sinister impresario behind "The Museum of Extraordinary Things", a Coney Island boardwalk freak show that thrills the masses. One night Coralie stumbles upon a striking young man taking pictures of moonlit trees in the woods off the Hudson River. With its colorful crowds, New York itself becomes a riveting character as Hoffman weaves her trademark magic, romance, and masterful storytelling in a sizzling and tender story of young love in tumultuous times.

The Book of Heaven

Patricia Storace

In this mythic and poetic retelling of the Garden of Eden, Eve describes her own version of Heaven and God. The reader follows the stories of four celestial women who have never had the chance to share their sacred perspectives. One of the novel’s central questions becomes “What if God were a woman?” How would that change our understanding of human life and social constructs? Inspired by the New Testament, Storace offers a new vision of biblical storytelling through a feminist lens, giving a voice to often silenced female characters.

While Beauty Slept

Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us

Michael Moss

Every year, the average American eats thirty-three pounds of cheese and seventy pounds of sugar. Every day, we ingest 8,500 milligrams of salt, double the recommended amount. It comes from processed food, an industry that hauls in $1 trillion in annual sales. In Salt Sugar Fat, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Michael Moss shows how we ended up here. Featuring examples from Kraft, Coca-Cola, Lunchables, Frito-Lay, Nestle, Oreos, Capri Sun, and many more, Moss's explosive, empowering narrative is grounded in meticulous, eye-opening research. He talks to concerned insiders who make startling confessions. Just as millions of "heavy users" are addicted to salt, sugar, and fat, so too are the companies that peddle them.

My Foreign Cities

Elizabeth Scarboro

When she was just seventeen, independent and ambitious Elizabeth Scarboro fell in love with irreverent and irresistible Stephen. She knew he had cystic fibrosis, that he was expected to live only until the age of thirty or so, and that soon she’d have a choice to make. She could set out to travel, date, and lead the adventurous life she’d imagined, or she could be with Stephen, who came with an urgency of his own. In crystalline prose, Scarboro describes the pulse of her relationship with Stephen with all its illuminating quirks.

Julian Hoffman

The Small Heart Of Things: Being At Home In A Beckoning World

Winner of the 2012 Association of Writers and Writing Programs Series Prize for Creative Nonfiction, author Julian Hoffman will speak about his work and read from his award-winning book, The Small Heart Of Things: Being At Home In A Beckoning World.

In The Small Heart of Things, Julian Hoffman intimately examines the myriad ways in which connections to the natural world can be deepened through an equality of perception, whether it's a caterpillar carrying its house of leaves, transhumant shepherds ranging high mountain pastures, a quail taking cover on an empty steppe, or a Turkmen family emigrating from Afghanistan to Istanbul. The narrative spans the common—and often contested—ground that supports human and natural communities alike, seeking the unsung stories that sustain us.

This free event is co-sponsored by Grass Roots Books & Music and the Spring Creek Project for Ideas, Nature and the Written Word.

Lionel Asbo: State of England

Martin Amis

Kendall heads the state of our March Reading Group discussion of Lionel Asbo: State of England by Martin Amis, an exuberant, acidic satire of modern society and celebrity culture—by a renowned author at the height of his powers.

Lionel Asbo, a terrifying yet weirdly loyal thug, has always looked out for his ward and nephew, the orphaned Desmond Pepperdine. He provides him with fatherly career advice (always carry a knife, for example) and is determined they should share the joys of pit bulls (fed with lots of Tabasco sauce), Internet porn, and all manner of more serious criminality. Des, on the other hand, desires nothing more than books to read and a girl to love (and to protect a family secret that could be the death of him). But just as he begins to lead a gentler, healthier life, his uncle—once again in a London prison—wins 140 million in the lottery and upon his release hires a public relations firm and begins dating a cannily ambitious topless model and "poet." Strangely, however, Lionel's true nature remains uncompromised while his problems, and therefore also Desmond's, seem only to multiply.

"At heart an old-fashioned novel. . . . Amis is, like Dickens, an insistently moral writer, satire being an edifying genre with a noble cause: the improvement of society." —The New York Times Book Review

Last of the Outlaws

Railroad Earth

The first time I heard “Old Man and the Land” [from the Elko album, 2006] on the radio I had to call in and ask who it was. I’ve been a devoted Railroad Earth fan ever since. Loving most everything they’ve recorded, I was so excited to see that they have put out a new album. The funky and get down beats always find me in the best of moods. On Last of the Outlaws the song “When the Sun Gets in your Blood” is very reminiscent of a few Paul Simon tunes. Love, Love, Love it!!
