A Story Lately Told: Coming of Age in Ireland, London, and New York

Anjelica Huston

“With her high cheekbones and piercing dark eyes, Huston was fated for success as a fashion model. As the daughter and granddaughter of film and stage royalty, she was also assured a career as an actress. How she fulfilled those dual destinies is the subject of the first in a planned two-volume memoir in which Huston delves into her past in stunning detail. . . As a multitalented contributor to her family's theatrical legacy, Huston candidly reveals the heady and heartbreaking realities of life in that misconceived stratosphere.” –Booklist

Dust (Kay Scarpetta Mysteries #21)

Patricia Cornwell

“Medical examiner Kay Scarpetta must deal with the murder of a female grad student from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology whose body is found wrapped in linen and carefully posed on the rugby field. Strange how this case resembles one that Scarpetta's FBI husband is handling in Washington, DC.” –Library Journal

“CORNWELL's. . . bestsellers include The Bone Bed, Red Mist, Port Mortuary, and Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper—Case Closed. Her earlier works include Postmortem—the only novel to win five major crime awards in a single year—and Cruel and Unusual, which won Britain's prestigious Gold Dagger Award for the best crime novel of 1993. Dr. Kay Scarpetta herself won the 1999 Sherlock Award for the best detective created by an American author.” –Ingram

Five Days in November

Clint Hill and Lisa McCubbin

“What this book whose contents we've waited 50 years for lacks in artistry, it makes up for in immediacy. Hill was one of the Secret Service agents beside J.F.K.'s car at the time of his assassination, and he managed to clamber onto the trunk in an attempt to protect the chief executive and his wife. Hill continues to feel guilty over the president's death. His account offers new, minute details of the events in Dallas and Washington, D.C., immediately before and after J.F.K.'s death. . . the book's photographs, some rare, [or] probably never seen before, are a particular strength.” –Publisher’s Weekly

Takedown Twenty

Janet Evanovich

New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum knows better than to mess with family. But when . . . mobster Salvatore 'Uncle Sunny' Sunucchi goes on the lam in Trenton, it's up to Stephanie to find him. Uncle Sunny is charged with murder for running over a guy (twice), and nobody wants to turn him in—not his poker buddies, not his bimbo girlfriend, not his two right-hand men, Shorty and Moe. Even Trenton's hottest cop, Joe Morelli, has skin in the game, because—just Stephanie's luck—the godfather is his 'actual' godfather.

Both Flesh and Not: Essays

David Foster Wallace

“Now that Wallace's unfinished novel The Pale King has been published posthumously, the inevitable trawl of his uncollected writings may begin in earnest and, as is the case here, it will inevitably yield both dingers and duds. His writings on subjects ranging from the U.S. Open to Zbigniew Herbert, the AIDS virus to Terminator 2, display, yet again, Wallace's genuine and infectious love for obsessive human endeavors as disparate as pro tennis, analytic philosophy, and pure math.” —Publishers Weekly

Marmee & Louisa: The Untold Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Mother

Eve LaPlante

“It's not unusual for a biography to include a family tree, but it's rare for the biographer to appear on it. LaPlante (Salem Witch Judge) is great-niece and cousin of the subjects of this involving mother-daughter portrait of Abigail May and Louisa May Alcott. . . [LaPlante’s] quest for . . . overlooked materials resulted in this first full biography of Abigail; a collection of her writings (My Heart Is Boundless;) and a fresh perspective on Louisa. Spirited Abigail . . . fell for a charismatic yet incompetent man and found herself trapped in poverty, caring alone for their four daughters. Her own dreams cruelly thwarted, Abigail brilliantly nurtured Louisa's literary genius. . . vividly set within the social upheavals of the Civil War era.” –Booklist (Starred Review)

Round about the Earth: Circumnavigation from Magellan to Orbit

Joyce E. Chaplin

“Hardship, frolic, barnstorming, and spiritual enigma shape this scintillating history of round-the-world travel. Harvard historian Chaplin traces evolving styles of circumnavigation from the Age of Sail's epics of scurvy and shipwreck through the chic, precisely scheduled luxury-liner tourism of the late British Empire to modern times, when globe-trotting on everything from bicycles to airplanes and space capsules could be an exercise in long-distance banality, a political statement, or a solo voyage of self-discovery. Along the way she lucidly explains the innovations and soggy pitfalls of developing transport technologies, explores the cultural meanings. . . and outlines the human experience of circumnavigation.” —Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

Giving Thanks: Poems, Prayers, and Praise Songs of Thanksgiving

Katherine Paterson

All Ages

“As they did in the beautiful Brother Sun, Sister Moon (2011), Newbery medalist Paterson and cut-paper artist extraordinaire Dalton combine their considerable talents to bring to young people the concept of giving thanks. . . poems, hymns, and snippets of praise songs from various cultures and religions, [allow] readers to experience emotions and practices through many voices. Dalton, who is a practitioner of the early-nineteenth-century American paper-cutting technique called scherenschnitte (scissor cuts,) has used paper antiqued in a coffee solution, ironed, and illuminated with watercolor.” –Booklist (Starred Review)

In Crossed, Cassia found Ky, the boy she's in love with but who's not her Match, after he disappeared into the Outer Provinces. He is now a pilot with the Rising . . . When a plague created by the Society spreads out of control, Ky is asked to help fly cures into the impacted cities. . . . Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Ransom Riggs

Maddy leads her first book group.

Riggs’ novel hit #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, and stayed on the chart for over 52 weeks consecutively.

“Jacob and his father travel from their home in Florida to Cairnholm Island off the coast of Wales, which, during the war, housed Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. . . Nearly 50 unsettling vintage photographs appear throughout, forming the framework of this dark but empowering tale, as Riggs creates supernatural backstories and identities for those pictured in them (a boy crawling with bees, a girl with untamed hair carrying a chicken). It's an enjoyable, eccentric read, distinguished by well-developed characters, a believable Welsh setting, and some very creepy monsters.” –Publishers Weekly

Poems to Learn by Heart

Caroline Kennedy

Poems to Learn by Heart by Caroline Kennedy is a great collection of various authors’ poems that people of all ages could enjoy and learn from. I also really liked the beautiful watercolor illustrations that went with each poem. This book has a lot to offer since the topics vary from page to page. I found the book very inspiring because of the range of different writing styles. Any one interested in poetry would enjoy this well-rounded book.

The Valley of Amazement

Amy Tan

It’s been eight years since Amy Tan’s last book, so I was excited to dive into her epic story set in turn-of-the-century Shanghai. The novel starts with the life of Violet, a young bi-cultural girl whose ever-changing circumstances bring her a life of unexpected tragedies along with new chances. Amy Tan deftly writes about Shanghai’s troubled times, and she traverses both the bridges and chasms between East and West, but once again, she especially addresses the tangled connections between mothers and daughters. This novel will embrace at least three generations, and I’m intrigued to see how it will all unfold!

Primates of the World: An Illustrated Guide

Jean-Jacques Petter

I first became interested in primates while my sister was studying for her degree in biological anthropology. Since then, I have taken my own anthropology classes on the development of humans. I have never ceased to find our closest genetic relatives richly fascinating. This book, which covers over 300 species, covering all families and their domains is beautifully illustrated. It makes the perfect introduction to the primate world, or a wonderful present for your primate-inclined loved one.

Suspect

Robert Crais

If you love cracking good crime novels and dogs, this book is for you. A brutal shooting killed LAPD officer Scott James’s partner and nearly killed him; now he’s recovering from physical and psychological wounds. Maggie, a German shepherd who was badly injured when her handler was killed in Afghanistan, suffers PTSD. (Author Crais does a fabulous job of getting inside Maggie’s mind without making her human.) These two damaged beings, paired together in LAPD’s canine unit, need each other. And together, they solve the mystery behind the shootings and track down the killers.
