The Mississippi-based journalist and blogger ranges far and wide in his explication of various theories of individual and social psychology, in the process shedding light on the personal blind spots that skew reality while also allowing us to navigate it.

The Telling Room: A Tale of Love, Betrayal, Revenge, and the World's Greatest Piece of Cheese

Michael Paterniti

Working at renowned Zingerman's Delicatessen in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the author discovered a special Spanish sheep's milk cheese unlike any other. Fascinated by this cheese, he embarked on a quest to find its birthplace in Castile, a small town some distance from Madrid, and became even more fascinated with the cheesemaker and his story.

"[Michael Paterniti] has proved here that if you love something enough and pay a passionate enough attention to it, the whole world can become present in it. That's true of both the cheese and the book."—John Jeremiah Sullivan, author of Pulphead

Driving Home: An American Journey

Jonathan Raban

For more than thirty years, Jonathan Raban has written with infectious fascination about people and places in transition or on the margins, about journeys undertaken and destinations never quite reached, and, as an expat, about what it means to feel rooted in America. Spanning two decades, Driving Home charts a course through the Pacific Northwest, American history, and current events. Proving that an outsider can be the keenest observer of the scene that natives take for granted, this collection of Raban's essays affirms his place as a respected commentator on the places, characters, and obsessions that constitute the American scene.

Dear Life: Stories

Alice Munro

“Munro's latest collection brings to mind the expression, What is old is new again. As curiously trite and hardly complimentary as that statement may sound, it is offered as unreserved praise for the continued wonderment provided by arguably the best short-story writer in English today. Some of these 14 stories present new directions in Munro's exploration of her well-recognized universe (rural and small-town Ontario), while other stories track more familiar paths, with characters and familial situations reminiscent of previous stories. . . [In] every story she finds new ways to make the lives of ordinary people compelling.” —Booklist Starred Review

Elsewhere

Richard Russo

“Pulitzer Prize-winning author Russo brings the same clear-eyed humanism that marks his fiction to this by turns funny and moving portrait of his high-strung mother and her never-ending quest to escape the provincial confines of their hometown of Gloversville, New York. All of her life, she clung to the notion that she was an independent woman. . . [and] finally escaped her deteriorating hometown, which went bust when the local tannery shut down, by moving to Arizona with her 18-year-old son when he left for college and following him across the country right up until her death.” —Booklist

The Twelve (Book Two of the Passage Trilogy)

Justin Cronin

Cronin’s sequel to The Passage picks up the story five years later, 100 years after a government experiment went horribly wrong, wiping out mankind as we know it. A government-made virus has turned people into vampiric beasts, all of them spread from 12 convicts who were unwittingly the government’s original test subjects. In order to save mankind, the original twelve must be vanquished, but the enemy has evolved and a dark new order has arisen with a vision of the future infinitely more horrifying than man's extinction.

The Raven Boys

Maggie Stiefvater

Young Adult

“By grounding this new series in what might be called everyday weirdness. . . Stiefvater (The Scorpio Races) avoids the burden of building a seamless alternate world, instead saturating our reality with magic. Haunting, distinctly individual characters are at the forefront: Blue, an outsider in her own home because she isn't clairvoyant; Gansey and his posse of misfits, who lack any sense of home and seek meaning elsewhere; and Barrington Whelk, a Latin teacher with a secret. . . . Hopes, fears, quirks, and forebodings gather gradually, coalescing as living portraits.” —Publishers Weekly Starred Review

The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving

Jonathan Evison

Pamela leads August’s literary road trip with The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving by Jonathan Evison, winner of the 2013 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award.

Following a family tragedy, Benjamin Benjamin is left with little in the world, so he enrolls in a class called the Fundamentals of Caregiving to prepare himself for a new profession. He quickly learns that the class provided little that is actually helpful when he is assigned to Trevor, a 19-year-old in the advanced stages of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The job gives Benjamin a renewed sense of purpose to his life, and the unlikely pair soon set off on a cross country road trip to see Trev’s estranged father, visiting can’t-miss roadside attractions, picking up hitchhikers, and being pursued by a mysterious Buick Skylark.

Mandela: The Authorized Biography

Anthony Sampson

Rich and thick with the life of an elegant man, and the history that brought forth his greatness, this excellent biography of Nelson Mandela shows vividly the importance, yet intense humaness, of his life. The author has known Mandela since 1951, and, in his own words, relates Mandela's life". . .stripped of the gloss of mythology and romance. . ." yet shows how the "glittering image of Mandela was magnified. . . " when he was sent to prison. I was fascinated to read about Mandela's childhood, the great-grandson of an African king, and how he, himself, so often refers back to his beginning years as his shaping and strength.

The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving

Jonathan Evison

Selecting a book for Reading Group is always challenging. Searching for something with some literary chops but light enough for summer, and always looking for something a little out of my wheelhouse to discuss, I picked Evison’s newest, a PNBA award winner, and wasn’t disappointed: there are life challenges to suffer through, and a summer road trip. I started reading this book early in the month and was immediately drawn into its story and the lives within. While the main character was not always likable, his story was interesting, and the author’s dry wit made me chuckle. The book is a winner.

The Wonder of Aging: A New Approach to Embracing Life After Fifty

Michael Gurian

Our youth-obsessed culture would have us believe that if we only eat well, exercise and use the right anti-wrinkle cream, we can defy the effects of aging. The Wonder of Aging provides a valuable road map of what to expect in the second half of life and how to cultivate meaning and hope in the midst of life’s changes. Family therapist Michael Gurian, who is no stranger to health challenges himself, suggests that we can celebrate the changes in our bodies and minds while moving more deeply into wisdom as we age. This book is a welcome guide for those over 50 who would like to become true elders, not just olders.
