On the Noodle Road: From Beijing to Rome, with Love and Pasta
Jen Lin-Liu
Food writer Lin-Liu, upon noting the similarities between an Italian meal and her own native delicacies of China, wondered: “Who really invented the noodle?” Traveling the Silk Road between Asia and Europe, she partook in both a moveable feast and an array of cultures to resolve her culinary question. Tracing the evolution of this dish back to the migrations along the ancient trade route, she savored not only the dumplings of Beijing, the manti of Turkey and the tortellini of Italy, but also the rich connections and histories of the women who cook them.

The Casual Vacancy
J. K. Rowling
When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils. . . Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Beyond the Blue Horizon: How the Earliest Mariners Unlocked the Secrets of the Oceans
Brian Fagan
Before Captain Cook and Columbus, there were mariners who boldly navigated the oceans in their quest to master the secrets of the world’s most mysterious terrain. Fagan explains how the voyages of ancient Polynesians plotted the course for seafarers and sailors throughout history.
“Tacking between first-person anecdotes, archeological explanations, and fictionalized scenes from the distant past, this salty work of historical imagination travels with the Micronesian outriggers that ferried moai carvers to Easter Island, the Egyptian timber barges that carried the cedars of Lebanon to the pharaohs, and the black ships that brought the Greek heroes to the gates of Troy.” – Publishers Weekly

The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving
Jonathan Evison
Pamela leads August’s literary road trip with The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving by Jonathan Evison, winner of the 2013 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award.
Following a family tragedy, Benjamin Benjamin is left with little in the world, so he enrolls in a class called the Fundamentals of Caregiving to prepare himself for a new profession. He quickly learns that the class provided little that is actually helpful when he is assigned to Trevor, a 19-year-old in the advanced stages of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The job gives Benjamin a renewed sense of purpose to his life, and the unlikely pair soon set off on a cross country road trip to see Trev’s estranged father, visiting can’t-miss roadside attractions, picking up hitchhikers, and being pursued by a mysterious Buick Skylark. |

Neé
A Year with Marmalade
Alison Reynolds, Illustrated by Heath McKenzie
This uplifting and enriching children’s books is perfect for teaching any little one that sometimes change (even the unexpected kind) can be both good and exciting. Beyond its beautiful message the overall design of this book cannot be raved about enough. It is whimsical with great use of color and space. The fluid nature of the text and its position on the page mimics the actions of the story and brings it to life. The art is delightful and amusing; it literally makes you smile as you turn each page and see a new adorable illustration and message!

Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers
Anne LaMott
Short enough to read in an afternoon, but deep enough to ponder for a lifetime, Help, Thanks, Wow is an inspiring book for anyone interested in spirituality. I say “inspiring” rather than “inspirational” because Lamott’s book prompts action rather than just emotion. In thoughtful, moving, and sometimes very funny anecdotes, Anne Lamott distills prayer to its simplest elements: asking for help from a greater power (whatever you believe that power to be), being grateful, and appreciating the wonder around us. How easy is that?
