 The Cleaner of Chartres

Salley Vickers
A quiet presence in the small French town of Chartres, Agnes Morel spends each morning cleaning the illustrious medieval cathedral and doing odd jobs for the townsfolk. She has touched their lives in her own special way, and captured the attention of the young restorer Alain Fleury. Yet no one knows where she came from or her dark secret, ever since Abbe Paul found her on the cathedral porch twenty years ago. Just as they begin to piece together the truth, her hidden past of tragic loss, an act of violence, and mistaken identity threaten to unbalance her simple, peaceful life.

  Sisterland

Curtis Sittenfeld
"Identical twins Kate and Vi (Violet) were born with scattershot psychic abilities. As grown women, living wildly divergent lives in St. Louis, they are inextricably tied to each other in cranky, frustrating, and often combative ways. Narrator Kate has worked hard to mask her 'sixth sense' by transforming herself into an ordinary wife [and mother]. . . Vi is an exuberant, self-centered self-promoter who gives psychic readings for a living. When an earthquake rattles St. Louis in September 2009, Vi's prediction that a much bigger one is on the way gains national traction, setting off a media circus and geographic panic." - Library Journal

She was performing with the legendary Barnum & Bailey Circus in Chicago less than 10 years later when [flyer Alfredo Codona] first set eyes on her and fell madly in love. Alfredo was determined to win the tiny trapeze artist and master the elusive and deadly Triple, consisting of three consecutive midair somersaults; a decade later he'd perfected the stunt, and shortly thereafter he and Leitzel, a fiery couple, were wed. Mercurian artist and biome designer Swan Er Hong is struggling to cope with her grandmother's death and an unexpected meteor strike when she gets caught up in a scientific conspiracy that touches on both the political and economic schemes of space-based humans, including Saturn's ring-surfing moon dwellers and the secretive factions controlling slowly terraforming Venus, as well as the quasi-independent quantum computers called qubes." - Publishers Weekly Starred Review

How Should a Person Be?

Sheila Heti
"[Heti] examines her titular question by emphasizing that, like life itself, the story of protagonist Sheila. . . doesn't always make perfect sense. After she leaves her husband, Sheila - an aspiring Toronto playwright by night and hair salon employee by day - looks to her friends and the world at large to determine how to be. Acts divided into chapters interspersed with conversations transcribed to read like plays follow Sheila from home to New York to Atlantic City in her search for clarity. . . [An] unorthodox compilation of colorful characters, friendship, and sex that provides an unusual answer to Heti's question." - Publishers Weekly

Poetry Reading and Book Launch

Charles Goodrich & Gary Lark

Troubadour Music Center

521 SW 2nd Street, Corvallis

Join Grass Roots Books & Music to celebrate poetry and the new releases of Charles Goodrich and Gary Lark.

Charles Goodrich's newest collection of poetry is A Scripture of Crows from Silverfish Review Press. Kim Stafford says: "Charles Goodrich here writes a manifesto for world change one compact epiphany at a time. Administrator of local discoveries, he names himself a 'commonist,' loyal to the local, to the democracy of creatures, to the light, keen blade of the language opening the envelope of our sleep... These poems are a restorative in their deft humor and quiet promise. They will change your days, if not your life." Goodrich serves as Director for the Spring Creek Project for Ideas, Nature, and the Written Word at Oregon State University.

Gary Lark's newest collection of poetry is Without a Map from Wellstone Press. Maxine Scates says: "In poem after compelling poem, Lark gives voice to lives which all too often go unheard, lives lived in rural towns, trailer courts and farm houses on the back roads, places where he has grown up, lived and worked, listening all along to the stories that truly matter: what it means to lose a job, and what it means to have one; what it means to fight in wars whose memory never leaves and what it means to be lost then found again." He worked for the Corvallis-Benton County Library for eleven years, and now lives with his wife Dorothy in Oregon's Rogue valley.
