I love summer. It seems to bring out the "active" in everyone, including our staff. I was so proud of our trainers and clients who participated in the cross-country, obstacle course race called Extreme Rampage on September 7. More about that in just a bit.
The Fitness Plus team welcomes two new trainers to our staff: Eddie Purdom and Joel Chandler. Both are graduates of the Lexington Healing Arts Academy's personal fitness training program. In addition, Joel did his internship at Fitness Plus, so many of you know him already. We are happy to have them on our staff.

Chris Williams is continuing to help anyone with nagging soft tissue injuries, like tendonitis or low back pain.
He is offering ultrasound treatments at our National Avenue location. Treatments increase heat and blood flow, helping damaged tissue heal faster.
Treatments are $20 and you can book through your trainer or call Chris directly at 859-619-3131.
Have a great month,
Sheila

Spotlight on Clients
|
Extreme Rampage, at MastersonStation Park, is a 4-mile course filled with interesting tests of strength, balance, agility and tenacity. Although I will tell you that all Fitness Plus participants finished in the top half of the field, the actual position of finish does not matter. To me, the willingness to step up to the starting line is the real test and what should be applauded. Steve MacNeil, Kimberly Campbell and David Brian all had their doubts when their trainer "suggested" that they try this race. I know they each thought about backing out, but they did not. They showed up, they competed and conquered this challenge. For the trainers that got to watch and be a part of this, it was one of our proudest professional moments: to help someone realize a new level of potential and accomplishment that no one can ever take away.
Congratulations to all who were brave enough to show up to the starting line. Check out some pictures that show clients, Steve, Kimberly and David as well as trainers Laura Coombs, Joey Hacker and Sheila Kalas on our blog. Maybe you want to do it next year? Are you brave enough to show up at the starting line?

Fitness Plus Personal Trainer
One of the most important things you can do for your body is to make sure you have and use correct posture. We all might slouch, every now and then, but to be mindful of your positions throughout the day is important. This can include things as simple as walking, to something as challenging as carrying and putting away groceries. Flexibility and resistance training play a huge role in improving postural imbalances, and can teach your body how to use correct form even when you don't think about it (muscle memory).
Important check points involving posture: * Use your legs: Anything that requires you to bend over will require you to use your legs. This is important, considering many people use their back to lift. Have you ever heard or said "My low back hurts"? This is one of the main causes of low back pain.

Q&A With an Ironman
|

Amy Ball is a certified triathlon coach and a personal trainer at Fitness Plus. On Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, she finished Ironman Louisville in 12:59:04. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at Amy's Ironman Louisville experience.
Q: What were you feeling when you crossed the finish line?
A: Of course this is the best part! Ironman Louisville has the best finish line ever. It is on Fourth Street Live and the crowd and vibe is fantastic! Cheering, music lots of energy. When I turned the corner to come into the finish chute I couldn't help but smile big and choke up. The best feeling of accomplishment ever! My family was right there, but there are volunteers that "catch" the finishers, give them their medals, water, blanket, and make sure they are OK.
Q: What did you eat after the Ironman?
A: I only drank some chocolate milk until about two hours later when I could stomach some crackers. It is very difficult to eat afterwards. But lots of food is offered to the finishers.
