Benefits of a Walking Program

By:  Chris Williams

There are many ways to exercise nowadays. Every time you turn on the television there is a new "foolproof plan" to get you in shape. The problem with a lot of these plans is the difficulty level. For most people if an exercise plan gets too hard, their next move is probably going to be squatting to the couch.

This is why one of the best exercise plans for longevity is developing a walking program. Walking is a low impact exercise that can help ease you into a higher level of fitness and health. Another benefit is walking is easily accessible to everyone, so your excuses are limited.

There are many health benefits from walking. Walking helps to lower your LDL (bad cholesterol) while also raising your HDL (good cholesterol). It also helps...

Spotlight on Clients

Congratulations to FP client Kimberly Campbell. Kimberly started working with trainer Laura Coombs in October 2012.

Kimberly made it clear that her job was very demanding and required her to travel a lot, making keeping up with regular exercise and having access to proper nutritional choices difficult. She wanted education and motivation from Laura to help her balance work and a healthy lifestyle.

Laura did her job of educating Kimberly, but it was Kimberly who took Laura's suggestions and advice to heart and worked hard to incorporate them into her life.

The result: Kimberly has lost 60 pounds, has increased her overall fitness and strength and developed healthy nutritional habits that she feels confident she can continue for life.

Kimberly is a great example of the results that you can get from both compliance and dedication.

Greetings!

Spring is here! New life; new growth; a time of reawakening after a long, cold winter. Spring is the perfect time to "renew" yourself and your attitudes about working out. Most of us can't wait to get back outside and out of the gym and spend time doing other activities like golf, yardwork, hiking, horseback riding, etc. Before you just jump in to full blown outdoor activity, give yourself a realistic assessment of your level of conditioning or fitness first.

Even if you have been working out over the winter, chances are you still had an overall decrease in physical activity, compared to the spring and summer months. I think that spending time rebuilding your base of cardiovascular fitness (via walking, running or cycling) is important before you start to push yourself in specific outdoor activities. Good cardiovascular fitness is the foundation on which all the other aspects of fitness are built on. Without good cardiovascular conditioning, it is difficult and even dangerous to try to greatly increase your strength, quickness or power. So, before you jump into serious outdoor activities, such as golf, gardening, etc. make sure you spend some time rebuilding your endurance base through walking or running. Do it outside and enjoy the beautiful spring that comes with living in Central KY.

Have a great month,

Sheila

We are happy to announce the addition of a new FP trainer, Stephanie Lovely, to our team.  Stephanie graduated with a degree in athletic training from Oklahoma State University, where she played on the varsity soccer team, competed on the varsity cross country and track teams, and shadowed in the varsity weight room. After graduating she earned a national D-level coaching license for soccer and two training certifications through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Certified Personal Trainer).  Stephanie enjoys working with athletes at all levels.  She uses her knowledge and experience to motivate people through their short-term goals and guide them to their long-term fitness goals.  Welcome, Stephanie!

Don't forget that trainer Chris Williams offers ultrasound treatments at the National Avenue gym for $20 each. Ultrasound is the best way to speed up the healing time of soft tissue injuries/irritations, such as tendonitis, and gives relief to muscle tightness, especially in the low back. Minor tendonitis can lead to chronic pain and serious damage of the affected joint; use ultrasound to prevent "little" injuries from becoming "big" injuries that interrupt your training. Ask your trainer how to contact Chris to make an appointment.

Eat more fiber and more low-density foods. Drink water throughout the day. Start your meal with a broth-based soup or some leafy greens. Slow down and taste every bite of food. These and other tips for beating hunger and boosting satisfaction are from registered dietitian Becky Hand.
