Overnight Vigil signup - openings left!

There are openings from 9:00 to 11:00 PM Thursday and from 7:00 to 11:00 AM Friday. The doors to the church will be locked through the night; however, someone will be posted inside the red (front) doors at all times to grant entrance and ensure a safe exit.
Tenebrae service to be offered on Holy Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm

This service of psalms and anthems accompanied by diminishing light precedes the
triduum services of Maundy Thursday, Holy Friday and the Great Vigil of Easter.  The most conspicuous features of the service are the gradual extinguishing of candles and other lights in the church until only one candle, considered the symbol of our Lord, remains.  Toward the end of the service this candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil.  At the very end, a loud noise is made, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of the resurrection (Matthew 28:2), the hidden candle is restored to its place and by its light all depart in silence.
Overnight Vigil

The Thursday night vigil (also called the overnight watch) is held in the chapel where you are invited to offer prayer and silent meditation through the night. On the night before he died, our Lord Jesus Christ asked his disciples to stay awake and pray with him. This is the opportunity for us to respond to his request. Sign up on the sign-up sheet outside the chapel for the hour(s) you would like to keep company with our Lord in the chapel. The vigil begins at approximately 8:30 PM (immediately following the Maundy Thursday service) and lasts until the noon service begins on Good Friday. At least one person needs to sign up to be present for each hour. Doors to the church will be locked through the night; however, someone will be posted inside the red (front) doors at all times to grant entrance and ensure a safe exit.

LET'S MAKE BREAD TOGETHER 2

If you've wished that making fresh bread

(without a machine)

were EASIER!!

If you've tried, but been disappointed with

bread making, especially "artisan bread;"

If you'd like to have fun with friendly folk

making & taking home bread... then

Join us in the St James Church kitchen on

Saturday, April 26

9:00 AM - noon (plan to stay 3 hours)

Space is limited, so call the Church office, 683-5686

Bring a 5 lb bag of UNbleached flour, 2 packets of yeast

or a jar of, a 1-gallon bucket (like ice-cream comes in or at

$ Tree Stores), a strong, long, comfortable spoon; and IF you have one, a baking stone and/or wooden pizza peel,

a nice CD, a smile, maybe some wine,

and time to wait while the bread does its thang.

That's it! I'll bring anything else we'll need.

Well, if you want to be squirrelly, bring a 1/2 cup of nuts, seeds or dried fruits. But all that's necessary is wanting the fun of making bread together and the time to do it! (Oh, & listening to instructions!)

Endowment Funds 2013 Annual Report

St. James Endowment Fund was restructured in January 2013.  The new structure includes a provision that an annual report be made available to all members of the congregation.  Please pick up your copy of the 2013 report in the Atrium in order to save us mailing costs.  While your Endowment Funds Board is excited about this Annual Report, we regret that several mistakes were made.  To minimize the probability of repeating these errors we invite you to carefully review the report and identify the errors.  The first to correctly identify the errors will qualify for a free dinner at the restaurant of your choice and must agree to serve as a proof reader for the 2014 edition.  Email your entry to: [email protected].

Are you facing a crisis? Have you been hospitalized? Is a loved one dying?

For these and other reasons, you may want some pastoral care from the parish. Like a loving family, we care deeply about each other and want to help in times of need. Often times the pastoral care team or the church office doesn't hear about parishioner difficulties until they are over. Of course we can raise prayers of thanksgiving for healing and comfort for those who mourn, but being present in the moment is important. Please call the church office directly (or ask someone in your family to do it) when you are in need of care. If possible, speak to a clergy person over the phone. You can explain the specifics of your situation and we will be empowered to do what would be most helpful to you. If you are in the hospital, the hospital will not relay information about your admission. You or someone in your family must tell us directly.  Call the church office at 683-5686. Let us know what's going on. We will do our best to share God's loving care with you.

LENTLENT

History of Christianity Lenten series led by Fr. David

The Final presentation will be shown again on Tuesday, April 22 at 7:00 PM.

Reconciliation of a Penitent

Lent is one season when people are particularly moved to make a formal confession of their sins and to receive sacramental absolution. See pages 446-452 in the Book of Common Prayer for some introductory information about the Reconciliation of a Penitent (confession). If you would like to make a confession in Lent or at any other time, have a conversation with a priest ahead of time and make an appointment for your formal confession. Mtr. Dawn and Fr. David hear confessions.

oet85th ANNUAL OLDE ENGLISH TEA - MAY 3
Wondering how you might contribute to the Olde English Tea? Mrs. Wintle loves donations!

Please consider donating any of the following items:

            Themed Basket for Silent Auction

            Small Gifts for Door Prizes

Represent your family or group's unique passions with a silent auction basket. Bring your group together and create a themed basket for the OET Silent Auction that represents your unique passion. It's a great way to have fun and contribute at the same time! See Mary Halley ([email protected]) for details.

Cookbook donations

We will be selling cookbooks this year.  This is a great venue, so please donate the cookbooks you are no longer using.  There is a basket on the stage and one in the garden corridor.

Mrs. Wintle has this to say about cookies for the Tea

It's not too early to begin making and freezing tea cookies for the Olde English Tea. Please let Marylee ( [email protected]) know what you plan to contribute.
Home and Handmade arts and crafts

The Olde English Tea needs your home and hand made arts and crafts.  Please donate some of your knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, jewelry, stuffed toys, pillows, doll clothes, woodworking, and anything you make!  Things you have that you are willing to donate that someone else made would also be wonderful.
Call me if you wonder if what you have will do and I'll say Yes!  Beth Criss, 682-3748   [email protected]

WANTED: Suitcase Project Chair

The St. James Outreach Committee is looking for someone to chair our Suitcase Project benefiting St. Francis Community Services. Children served by St. Francis need suitcases for their belongings, and we are hoping to provide them. The chair of this project would need to publicize the effort, collect the suitcases, and deliver them to the St. Francis offices in Wichita. If interested, please contact Judy Goodpasture 218-1142, [email protected].

2013 Wichita Alternative Gift Market Final Results

St. James Sunday School, Junior Daughters, and Youth raised a total of $2,731 for their adopted projects to help the needy of our world.  The complete list of project totals is posted on the bulletin board.

Thanks to everyone who supported this life-giving work.

Junior Daughters of the King Lenten Tree

The Junior Daughters of the King have set up a Lenten Giving Tree in the church foyer. This tree is decorated with plastic eggs that contain a strip of paper requesting specific items needed for a toiletries drive. Each egg requests six of a particular need, whether it is shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, deodorant or razors - full-sized containers, not trial size. Bring the items to the church and place them in the special collection bin located under the tree. The Junior Daughters will be delivering these items to Episcopal Social Services during Easter week. Please help us in this effort to help those for whom these items often seem like luxuries.
