Supplements and Safety
 A study was released recently in New York that hit the press a couple of weeks ago. The study was looking at the supplement industry and whether or not these unregulated products are efficacious and/or safe. This study decided some herbal supplements are neither efficacious nor safe. I LOVE it when this subject is brought up and becomes a national topic of conversation. The argument is that prescribed medications are FDA approved, and therefore safe AND efficacious. And yet medication-related side effect death and disease is higher than some of our biggest hitters like cardiac disease and cancer in this country. FDA approval does not make anything safer or more efficacious. However, the subject of regulation and oversight is an important one. The supplement industry is not allowed to make diagnostic claims and the FDA monitors this very carefully. But what about the vast range of pricing and quality? The supplements that were pulled from shelves (and this has been historically true for all of these studies) were supplements sold in discount retailers and drug stores that sell over the counter supplements. These are the cheaper, more mass produced products that are NOT SUBJECT TO TESTING.
People ask me about supplements routinely. How come supplements ordered and sold by medical providers are more expensive? The assumption is often that medical providers just want to make a buck off of their patients. The reality is that we only carry supplements from companies who voluntarily test their products with outside labs to assure quality and efficacy. We want to be assured that our fish oil doesn't contain PCBs. We want to know our probiotics have living strains of helpful bacteria. We want to be clear that our herbal supplements are organic and free of heavy metal contamination. We need to feel confident that what is on the label is in the bottle. We are only dealing with companies who can submit a certification of this information. This kind of quality control means batches have to be made in smaller amounts to eliminate the need for preservatives and fillers. This kind of quality assurance will cost more. However, in the supplement industry you get what you pay for. At Fern Life Center, we only carry supplements that have been proven to be pure, organic when possible, and free of heavy metals and what is on the label is in the bottle. We will only work with suppliers who have nutraceutical quality.
