The 5 Principles of the Andean Way
I just returned from traveling to Peru with an incredible group of people. Given all the ceremonies, traveling, and trekking in the Andes I thought it appropriate to share some of the ways the mountain natives live their lives. These Q'ero people are direct descendants of the Inca and are inextricably connected to their spirituality and the earth, which they call Pacha Mamma. One of the reasons for their authenticity, peace, happiness, and wisdom is because of the 5 pillars they live their lives by. They say these quechua words each morning before they arise and again each night as they review the balance of how they lived their day. In a nutshell here they are:
The 5 principles
a. First: Munay, which means love, tranquility and beauty. When we balance our inner and outer worlds we reflect love and beauty and then manifest benevolence in action and character. We then see love and beauty in everything around us.
b. Second: Yachay, which means to learn, to know, and to remember, as well as to be flexible and thoughts and actions. It also means to unlearn...those things that do not serve us and any rigidly held thought systems or patterns.
c. Third: Llank'ay (pronounced yan-kay), which means the way of action or "to work" in literal translation. This goes beyond physical labor to include mental, creative and spiritual work such as learning ceremony and other ways of connection to spirit.
d. Fourth: Kawsay, which means life. This refers to the matrix of energy or the web of life that links all living things on Earth and their connection to Pacha Mamma. The intertwining of life and energy is called kawsay pacha (the world of living energy).
e. Fifth: Ayni, which is the single most important concept of the Andean Way. It is translated as reciprocity and mean the interchange of loving kindness, knowledge, and the fruits of one's labor between individuals, between humans and the environment, and between humans and nature spirits. "I will help you today, and tomorrow you might help me". The purpose of reciprocity is the maintenance of life. This allows us to move beyond the, "me" and "mine" and live more in harmony with the planet and our fellow humans in community.
If we all lived in this very conscious way we would have the same peace, contentment, health and wisdom that draws me back year after year to the Andes...it's a literal elixir of life.
Here's to your health!
