LETTER FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

BE A "GAME CHANGER"

In recent weeks the subject of Domestic Violence has come to the forefront in the media because of the NFL players involved. Amador County does not have an NFL team but what we do have is domestic violence. Operation Care has provided services to 213 domestic violence victims (men and women) this year. Instead of asking "why she stays"  let's ask "how do we stop this?" As a community we must join together and be "GAME CHANGERS". We must say collectively domestic violence is not acceptable in our community. You cannot do this to our friends our neighbors or our family members. This is not a woman's issue this is a human issue.

The spotlight on Domestic violence because of the NFL has given us an opportunity to have the conversation. Operation Care has been providing domestic violence and sexual assault support services and education to our community for over 33 years. We have recently joined with over 450 similar agencies in submitting a letter to football Commissioner Roger Goodell requesting that the NFL be proactive and bold by making a significant investment in a long-term comprehensive community engagement campaign focused on ending violence.

We would like to ask the same of our local community. Help us STOP domestic violence. If you are a coach or a youth leader you have the power and opportunity to create awareness and shift attitudes to encourage a healthy and safe community, please contact us and allow us to meet with your team or group and talk about healthy relationships and the long term effects of domestic violence. As adults and role models it is our responsibility to make sure that the kids in our care are given every resource and opportunity to be a Game Changer.

It's time for our Second Annual PURPLE SOLDIER NEON FUN RUN! Please join us to raise awareness of domestic violence. This purposeful night-time event scheduled for the evening of Saturday, October 25th, is sponsored by the Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort, and will begin and end in the Parking Lot across from the Public Service Building on Dalton Road in Jackson. Registration will begin at 7:00 p.m. and the fun run starts at 8:00 p.m.

Why Purple Soldiers?

Every October, Operation Care places purple silhouettes in various locations throughout Amador County, representing local domestic violence victims and their stories of courage and hope. This year, these "Purple People" will come to life as victims and supporters walk/run together as Purple Soldiers against Domestic Violence. Participants will complete the run/walk in the dark using glow sticks, flashlights, and street lights. Runners, walkers, and observers are encouraged to decorate themselves with glow in the dark attire as well.

All participants pre-registering will receive a Purple Soldier t-shirt (while supplies last), wristband, and glow products in advance, so they may arrive in style. Click on the Pre-registration forms above and mail or drop it off at the office at 619 New York Ranch Road in Jackson. Cost for the run/walk is $20.00 for adults or $35 for a Family Pack (includes 2 adults and unlimited children). Children under 18 are FREE. Anyone interested in volunteering for this exciting event should contact Anna at 209-223-2897.

Operation Care Receives Mary Kay and Red Rover Grants

While domestic violence has experienced a boost in awareness due to recent events, women and children in Amador County continue to be in need of housing, resource and support programs as they flee abusive situations and work to rebuild their lives.

Operation Care received a $20,000 grant from The Mary Kay Foundation as part of the organization's annual Shelter Grant program to maintain critical services and programs. Much of our domestic violence funding is through restrictive grants that state specifically HOW the money is to be used. While they provide the bulk of our services, we are so appreciative of the unrestricted funds from the Mary Kay Foundation. With this grant, we will be able to provide the extra services that make such a big difference to our clients.

Human's are not the only victims of domestic violence. About 20% of the families that stay at our shelter tell us that they either left their pets behind, or that they need to bring their pets with them to our shelter. Red Rover recently granted $3,000 to create space to house pets on-site at our safe house. This will greatly ease the minds of our clients if they can rest assured their four-legged friends are also safe.
