| Detoxification Dos & Don'ts
Every home needs a deep cleaning once in a while--especially the one that houses your living systems.
As hard as we may work to lead a healthy lifestyle, the air we breathe, the food and water we ingest, dental work and medicines, and the materials in our home and workplace, may still be exposing us to harmful metals, toxic chemicals, and pesticides. Even normal cellular activities in our bodies produce toxic byproducts such as lactic acid, ammonia, and homocysteine. Normal healthy bodies are equipped to excrete toxins via natural pathways in the liver, kidneys, intestines and skin. But if one's health is less than optimal and/or if the exposure is excessive, our tissues will accumulate toxins which may contribute to a wide variety of disease symptoms, including Alzheimer's, autism, fibromyalgia, fatigue, allergies, low immunity, as well as heart disease, liver problems, cancers, digestive problems, resistance to antibiotics, and much more.
Detoxification programs are important ways to deep cleanse our bodies on the inside, and BioPure carries a number of useful products for such programs, three of which are described below. Most detox programs involve a "chelator" to bind with metals. The term "chelation" comes from the Greek root "chele" meaning "to claw" because it was believed that the "chelator" grabbed metals, like a crab's claw, from circulating blood and tissues. In 1953, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) for chelation therapy. In extreme cases of lead or mercury poisoning, EDTA is usually administered intravenously. Some natural foods such as Chlorella and Cilantro (discussed below), are less extreme, yet still very effective chelators, while offering a multitude of other health benefits at the same time.
It is advised, that any detoxification program should be undertaken with the supervision of a professional healthcare practitioner who can design and monitor an individual protocol that works safely and comfortably for your particular needs, genetic makeup, and life-style. In addition to dietery supplements, some programs may involve colonics, saunas, juicing, use of suppositories, or fasting. Detoxing too aggresively could deplete important nutrients and minerals, or release stored toxins quicker than the body can eliminate them. Dosages and approaches may need to be adjusted.

Chlorella

Chlorella is a microscopic, single-celled, blue-green algae found in fresh water environments. Each tiny cell is a complete food, rich in protein, vitamins and minerals, and for its size, contains the highest content of chlorophyll known in the plant kingdom. It is the most widely used nutritional supplement in Japan. Chlorella's remarkable health benefits include antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties that boost the immune system and can lower cholesterol and glucose levels in the blood.

 Cilantro
- the Sequestor
Cilantro, (Coriandrum sativum) is not only a tasty pungent herb commonly used in Mexican, Thai, and other Asian cooking, but it also has many of the same health benefits as Chlorella, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, immune-boosting, and metal-chelating properties. Some detox protocols combine the use of Cilantro with Chlorella because the Cilantro is believed to be able to mobilize metals stored in the central nervous system, displacing them to excretory pathways such as the digestive and urinary tracts, where Chlorella can then further sequester them, preventing the loosened metals from reentering other tissues. Together, these two chelators can help each other to really get the job done right!
Research has also shown Cilantro to be helpful for the digestive tract, encouraging beneficial bacteria, enzymes and acids, stimulating peristalsis in the intestine, and decreasing flatulence. It has even been reported as an aphrodisiac. BioPure carries Cilantro as a tincture that provides an easily used, concentrated dose of the herb's health benefits.  Metal Sweep
BioPure's MetalSweep is another powerful chelator that works in a slightly different way from Chlorella and Cilantro. It consists of a carrier base of highly purified, insoluble, tiny silica particles that have been 'functionalized' with a particular type of thiol molecule that forms strong bonds with metals like mercury, cadmium and lead. The resulting complex molecules containing silica, thiol and metal are inert and biologically unavailable. MetalSweep works only in the digestive tract to 'sweep' metals safely out of the body without the chance of them being reabsorbed, or for harmful oxidative reactions to occur along the way.
MetalSweep also contains Acerola, one of the most potent sources of Vitamin C known. Studies have shown that Vitamin C can enhance the effectiveness of the chelation reaction in a number of ways. Initiallly, it activates the metals, second, it quenches free radicals, and lastly, it plays a part in the recycling process of Glutathione, another important antioxidant molecule synthesized in our body, that plays a primary role in detoxification pathways.
With the new formulation including Acerola, MetalSweep takes the place of our former product known as MicroSilica. MetalSweep is expected to be available for shipment starting February 1st, 2013, and more information about it will be up on the BioPure website within a week or two.

- We provide bus passes for our employees so they can minimize their carbon footprint.

Cilantro Pesto
Enjoy the fresh flavor of this sauce on a plate of your favorite pasta, and on bread or crackers.
- 1 clove garlic
- 1 cup washed and packed fresh cilantro leaves (larger parts of stems removed)
- 1/3 cup pine nuts, walnuts, or other nuts or seeds
- 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- A dash of cayenne pepper
- Salt and pepper to taste
Blend the cilantro and olive oil in a blender, add other ingredients to make a paste. Some like it smooth, some like it chunky-it's up to you.
Serve warm or cold ...
