Menacing Microbes
With this first issue of Thrive, we thought we would highlight a few of BioPure's new products that have anti-microbial properties. Though many of the microbes we share this world with are harmless and/or beneficial to our health, there are those such as E. coli, Staphylococcus, and tuberculosis bacteria, Candida fungus, influenza virus, malaria parasites, and others, that can cause serious disease and even death. Heavy use of synthetic antibiotics is resulting in new, more virulent and drug-resistant strains of microbes to develop. Some bacteria can also form a sessile matrix or colony, called a "biofilm", with internal communication among its aggregate cells. When this occurs, the microorganisms are even more effective at interfering with proper functioning of our own cells, and become more resistant to antibiotics. In addition, many commonly prescribed drugs can create serious side-effects, especially with long-term use. For all these reasons, it is essential to explore natural alternatives that can be used alone or in conjunction with modern drugs. Many of those come in the form of natural herbs that have been used in traditional folk medicine for centuries. These natural substances often cause little or no side-effects, and their target may have less chance of developing immunity to them.

"Bashful" plant doesn't shy away from microbes.
Mimosa pudica is one of the newest additions to BioPure's product line. It's species name "pudica" comes from Latin meaning "shy" or "bashful". This herb has fascinated people for centuries because of its curious habit of folding its leaves inward in response to stimuli. These unusual movements among plants are referred to as "seismonastic", responding to touch, movement, or warming, and "nyctinastic", rhythmic closing and drooping of leaves at night-almost as if the plant is sleeping. Some botanists believe the "bashful" behavior of Mimosa's leaflets is a defense mechanism against grazing animals, thus making itself look withered and less appetizing, and helps to conserve moisture. Though we don't know exactly why Mimosa exhibits these movements, we do know that the plant contains powerful antioxidants and is an effective anti-parasitic agent. One quarter of a teaspoon of BioPure's Mimosa pudica powder mixed with water or your preferred drink, taken twice daily, may help the body get rid of persistent parasitic infections.

Garlic wards off more than just vampires.
Not only is Allium sativum, commonly known as garlic, one of the world's favorite and most widely used culinary herbs, but it is also a potent anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory agent. Garlic contains a strong antioxidant compound called "allicin" and can aid the immune system in fighting off bacterial and fungal infections, and ward off cardiovascular disease by relaxing vascular smooth muscle, dilating blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, and reducing inflammation and cholesterol. BioPure is now offering certified organic freeze-dried garlic in convenient capsules, each one providing a stable and generous 5.4 mg of allicin. This is twice the amount of bioactives in our old formula, and you get more capsules per bottle, at less cost per serving. Another idea: give your salad dressing or smoothie a super immunity boost by adding a half teaspoon of BioPure's loose freeze-dried powdered garlic. A liquid option of raw organic garlic in electrolyte solution is also available.

Tea that tackles the common cold.
Cistus incanus tea is full of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial health benefits that will not only boost the immune system, but may also help the body's fight against rheumatic pain, acne, menstrual cramps, ulcers and other gastro- and urinary tract disorders. BioPure's Cistus (pronounced "kiss-tus") tea is 100% organic and comes with reusable organic cotton bags. Try compressing a used tea bag on a mouth sore to relieve soreness and speed healing, or wipe on acne to help reduce inflammation and fight bacteria. Cistus is a pink-flowering shrub, sometimes called the "gray-haired rock rose", and is native to the Mediterranean region. Interesting facts: Many years ago, goats were grazed in the hills where Cistus grew and the plant's sticky resin, called "labdanum", would adhere to the goat's fur. They would then be sheared, the fur boiled, and the resin would be collected off the surface of the water to be used in medicines, incense, and perfumes. Also, the sculpted false beards of the ancient Pharoahs were made of goat hair held together by the sticky labdanum resin and held on by a tied chord.
