Keep On Keepin' On

End of the school year is approaching, so it's time to wrap things up, right?

Wrong! MAME leadership continues to work on behalf of our profession year-round. In fact, once school's out we have more time to dedicate to meeting the needs of our members.  Contacts and meetings with Michigan Department of Education, Library of Michigan, Michigan Education Association, and Michigan legislators happen through the summer. MAME representatives participate at AASL and ISTE national conferences. MAME's Executive Board has a retreat day to work on strategic plans.  Lisa Brakel and the Conference Committee work through the summer so that November's 42nd annual conference, School Library Strong! in Bay City will be one you can't miss. Kay Wejrowski is completing the arrangements for July's Summer Institute in Battle Creek.

We know you're not taking a complete break this summer either. (Do we ever?) Before school's out, spread the word about the Summer Institute to librarians and classroom teachers. We've set this up to be an opportunity for you to learn along with your building colleagues. There's even a price break for coming as a twosome. Take advantage of your extra free time to contact your legislators to advocate for strong school library programs. Our advocacy toolkit is still available. Reflect on the great things you're doing professionally that you can share in a session at our fall conference. Apply to be a presenter here.

Stay tuned for details about an MDE webinar in July on early literacy and mathematics resources and the role of the school librarian. MAME and the Library of Michigan will be leading this free webinar, which we hope will inform preschool-elementary administrators and teachers as to our value.

I hope you'll take advantage of all that MAME is doing to meet member needs. Also, we encourage you to take the next step by volunteering your ideas and time to the organization. Let me know if that's you.

Our closing Keynote speaker will be Leslie Preddy the current AASL President Elect. MI Notable Author Visits Marshall High School

Connecting students with the real world is an invaluable facet of education and one that is often difficult to fit into rich and busy curriculum. Teachers put their heart and souls into creating dynamic and engaging lessons that provide students with essential skills and knowledge; however, bridging the gap between the classroom and the real world can sometimes prove to be a challenge. Students rarely have the opportunity to interact with a professional who can help create a meaningful link between learning and applying what is learned. On Wednesday, April 29th, about ninety Marshall High School students were fortunate to meet and collaborate with a published author and writing instructor from Grand Valley University.

As part of the Michigan Notable Author Library tour program, Marshall High School Library served as the host library for award-winning author, Monica McFawn. Her collection of short stories, Bright Shards of Someplace Else, has earned the Flannery O'Connor Award, recognizing emerging writers, as well as a spot on the 2015 Michigan Notable Book list. Although many of our students didn't know of McFawn nor her book, they had prepared insightful questions to learn more about the writing process, character development, and becoming a writer. Students spent the day writing their own short stories under the direction of McFawn, using one of her own writing strategies. They then shared some of the stories and received constructive feedback on their characters, plots, and descriptions. Each class had time to ask their questions and hear straight from the author herself on how she became a writer, the process she took to publish her book, and many other intriguing responses. Students walked away from the day with an authentic, relative experience with a professional writer.

Students were asked what they took away from the presentation. One student commented the writing activity was useful for "getting us to think outside the box." While another felt the writing they did was great at "testing creativity." Students enjoyed the opportunity to engage in conversation with McFawn, saying "[it gave] an insight to an author's life." The students' reactions from the day proved we had a successful and meaningful program! Thank you to the Library of Michigan and the Michigan Humanities Council for providing the opportunity to serve as a host for a Michigan Notable Author and a very special thank you to Monica McFawn for spending an incredibly meaningful day with our students!

    Intellectual Freedom

Intellectual Freedom: Not Just For Us Library Types!

We tend to think that only we library types are interested in intellectual freedom (IF) issues. That is not the case. We have plenty of company in our fight against censorship. In addition to ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedomand the Freedom to Read Foundation the following organizations promote the cause of intellectual freedom.  If facing a real or potential challenge, these groups can prove to be powerful allies.

American Booksellers Association (ABA) - national retail book industry trade association with a long history of defending First Amendment rights; they originated Banned Book Week  www.bookweb.org

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) -- This national, nonpartisan organization is dedicated to protecting the principles embodied in the United States' Bill of Rights. Activities include litigation, legislation, and public education.  www.aclu.org

American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) --supports the rights of free expression of individual authors. The committee sponsors the annual I Read Banned Books campaign.  www.asja.org

The Authors Guild -- a national society of professional authors, long involved in preserving and defending First Amendment rights, including school book banning cases.  www.authorsguild.org

Free Expression Network (FEN) -- a national coalition that include writers, artists, librarians, filmmakers, booksellers, publishers, recording producers, musicians, journalists, lawyers, and more, united in the belief that "free expression and free access is he indispensable precondition of liberty."

    www.freeexpression.org

Media Alliance -- The Media Coalition is an association that defends the First Amendment right to produce and sell books and magazines.  www.media-alliance.org/section.php?id=42

National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) -- an alliance of national organizations that include religious, educational, professional, artistic, labor, and civil rights groups committed to defending freedom of thought, inquiry, and expression.

National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) --  the national professional organization for English educators includes an "intellectual freedom center" and a standing committee against censorship.

People for the American Way -- dedicated to making the promise of America real for every American including the freedom of speech.  www.pfaw.org

    Honor a Retiree!
Each year at our annual conference we recognize our members who have chosen to end the professional chapter in their book and move on to relaxation! Do you know someone who is retiring or are you retiring? We'd love to honor all of the new retirees this fall. Please fill out the Retiree Form so that we can plan on including these individuals in our program.

The final bell of the year will be ringing in the next few days or weeks. We spend our year reading materials for our students, teachers, and curriculum but often find little time and energy for personal reading. Once you recover from the hectic last weeks of school grab a book and indulge in pure, pleasure reading!

Here are a few suggestions to get you started.
