President's Column

Tag, you're it!

I'm writing this column while in Cleveland at an AASL Affiliate Assembly meeting for our region of the country. This morning we went around the table sharing what's happening in our states. By the time we got to the last person, she had nothing more to offer; we are all experiencing similar struggles and challenges. Budget cuts, a lack of legislative support, and evaluation issues are impacting all our libraries. The difference I see is in how we're trying to deal with it. Michigan currently has the most audacious campaign to stem the tide of school librarian losses through legislative advocacy.

Our first task is to educate our decision- and policy-makers about our role in student achievement. The legislators don't understand how school libraries support technology integration, digital skills, early literacy, and college & career readiness. We can't expect to see any change in commitment to school library programs until we have policy-makers who champion our value.

MAME leadership can't do this without you. Our organization can't afford a lobbyist, and you can't assume someone else (like MAME leadership) will do all the advocating we need to make a change. That's where you come in. Each of us can have influence in our part of the state. State senators and representatives all have office hours in their home districts that we can take advantage of. As we've been going through this process we've learned that most legislators do not get much feedback from their constituents; they welcome our input.

To make the process easier, we've put together a great advocacy toolkit. We've even provided you with the words and documents to share our message. Read through the materials, equip yourself, and reach out to your representatives. Contact me if you have questions. I can't stress enough the importance of your action. We can make a difference if we all do our part.

Now is the time!

Maybe you have done a fantastic collaborative unit with some of your fellow teachers? You could all come

In 1999, she partnered with Discovery Education and maintained the site until late 2012 when the site was retired.

Our closing Keynote speaker will be Leslie Preddy the current AASL President Elect. Preddy is a previous AASL Collaborative School Library Award recipient and under her tenure, Perry Meridian Middle School was named a National School Library Program of the Year in 2010. Teen Tech Week at THS -

"Libraries are for making..."

During the month of March Trenton High School Instructional Media Center celebrated Teen Tech Week. The goal of TTW was to promote our IMC's digital resources and services that are available to students and staff. We kicked off the week with a Twitter Rally on Monday and hosted different events throughout the week. We were even able to give away seven iTunes gift cards to students that participated in TTW thanks to a generous donation from the Trenton Business Association.

On Tuesday the IMC hosted Robotics Day. Our schools robotics team had their robots on display and allowed students to test out the robots. We also had visitors from the University of Detroit Mercy's Robotics Program. U of D students demonstrated four different robots and allowed students to test them out.

On Wednesday the IMC hosted a Technology Career Fair. Ten professionals from different technology fields including cyber security, social media, web design, and engineering visited THS to talk about their careers with students that attended the event.

Thursday was QR Code Day. Students were able to checkout a tablet from the IMC and try to complete our QR Code scavenger Hunt.

We rounded out the week by promoting our OverDrive ebooks and Kindles that are available for checkout.

Overall, we had a great turnout for our TTW events. Students really benefited from the celebration and we look forward to making next year's TTW bigger and better!

We are lodging across the 1000 foot beach and little park to American Boutique Inn, rooms $68 and up per night, many doubles.

Please make reservations at the link above, mentioning the MAME 4Evers/Haley. Also let Annette know what days you and your roommate are coming. Breakfast each day is included and the Inn is within walking distance to several good places to eat. Some carpooling from southern Michigan is possible, too!

RESERVATION DEADLINE IS July 1st or until the Inn is sold out for those nights. Sooner is better!

Among the activities planned:  Lots of socializing via a yacht ride out under the Mighty Mac, an evening at the International Dark Sky Park, the Lumber Jack show, plus exploring the area:  Lighthouse, or Fort, or Mackinac Island for those who wish, Petoskey or Harbor Springs or Cheboygan half day of shopping and galleries (at post-season prices), beach bumming with books, pub crawl, fudge tasting and more. Evening parties around the pool or beach will include wine and munchies, as is our tradition!  Many of us find a sports bar to watch the Tigers play-so, many activities to choose among.  Bring a cooler to haul back home some of the freshest fish off the dock in town or their locally smoked lake fish.  Or fudge! (eeuw, not in the same cooler!)

If you are planning to retire this June, contact Teri Belcher to get your MAME 4Ever membership instated and order your RED embroidered 4Ever polo.

Hoping to see all retirees this September!

"A School Library within a Global Community"

Klaudia Janek, IB teacher-librarian for International Academy of Bloomfield Hiils, MI was recently featured as a guest blogger on Gale / Cengage's The Blog site. She shares her involvement with the IB program's Extended Essay, a 4,000 word research essay written about a student selected topic. The essay lends itself perfectly for the expertise of a teacher-librarian to instill the life-long learning skills of research in young adults, as Janek details in her blog." "The IB Extended Essay is an opportunity to do academic research at the high school level. It really prepares students for research at the university level. Students who complete the IB program have been taught research skills so that they know to establish the credibility of an author, they can create a Works Cited or Bibliography, they know how to parenthetically cite (or footnote) their sources, they understand that a variety of quality sources will give them will give them credibility as researchers as opposed to taking the easy way out and uncritically surfing the internet."

Celebrating School Libraries!
"Sharing Success!"

Bethany Bratney, National Board Certified Librarian for Novi High School presented at the State Board of Education meeting. As a representative for
the Network of Michigan Educators, she did a brief presentation called "Sharing Success." The purpose of the presentation was to share stories of success from real classrooms and schools around Michigan with the State Board. During her presentation, Bratney was able to communicate some of her achievements through quantifying the activities that come from a strong school library. The presentation seemed to be well-received!

Thank you Bethany for promoting the importance of school libraries!

Small Steps for Libraries!
Imagine a world where every student had access to a library with "certified librarians; equipped with up-to-date materials and technology." Although ALA's recent work with Sen. Whitehouse (D-RI) did not generate the full results, they did achieve a bit of progress. The amendment that did pass indicates that effective school library programs are "an eligible use of funds under a program for literacy and arts education."

The ceremony marked the 70th anniversary of liberation of the camps.

Calling MAME 4Evers
The dedicated retirees of MAME 4Ever's are preparing to put their expertise at work yet again. This time they are tackling 3 elementary schools with book rooms that that need to be barcoded, cataloged, and labeled. Right now the gang is still working on the first building. If any MAME4Ever's out there are interested in helping or can pick up of books to be cataloged, barcoded, and then returned for labels and shelving, they'd love to hear from you. If you work for the day, the schools provide lunch! Keep in mind, we are working with a professional, Lisa Brakel, so we are not replacing any professional staff.  We are simply helping to stretch her time, with extra hands.
