President's Column

Happy Michigan Spring to all MAME Members! This May some MAME members traveled outside of Michigan to participate in AASL/ALA events.

Gwenn Marchesano, MAME-President Elect, and myself attended the AASL Region 3 Meeting in Minneapolis on May 3rd and 4th. AASL Region 3 includes the states of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Each affiliate state organization sends one or two representatives to the regional meeting. The main purpose of this regional meeting was to decide upon and write up commendations and concerns that the region will submit to the AASL Affiliate Assembly for consideration.

Our region decided to recommend three commendations:

The group also decided to write up one concern to send to AASL:

  • The concern that there are public libraries 'taking over' school libraries.

In addition, the regional meeting was a time for the state organizations to share information including information about their conferences, recruiting membership, organizational business practices, state book awards, and more.  Gwenn and I both walked away with ideas for our organization and our upcoming conferences.

May 5th and 6th were ALA's National Library Legislative Day. A huge thank you to the Michigan National Library Legislative Day Delegation especially to MAME Members -- Regina Cable, LaRene Klink, and Deb Biggs-Thomas who went to Washington DC and met with legislative offices to advocate for libraries including school libraries. A listserv notice went out to all MAME members to participate in Virtual National Library Legislative Day. Thanks to all MAME members who participated. By the way, you don't have to be an American Library Association (ALA) member to sign up for ALA policy action alerts. Visit this site to find out more about it.

All my best to everyone. Hoping that the "end of the school year" goes well for all!

Please contact me if you have ideas or questions.

All my best,

Kathy Lester, MAME President, 2014

Outreach: Summer Reading Promotion

Promoting summer reading is a great way to help increase student achievement as well as making your library program more visible.  Some methods for promoting summer reading are listed below:

  • Invite Public Librarians in to promote their summer reading programs to students. Promote the public library programs to parents through your school website or end of the year newsletter.

  • Have an End of the Year Book Exchange to help promote summer reading

    • Students bring in gently-used appropriate level books and receive certificate for 'shopping' at book exchange.

    • Schedule book exchange for a time after 'all books are due back to the library'

    • On the day of the book exchange, have a 'reading celebration' and strongly promote summer reading.

    • Give shopping 'certificates' to students with low reading scores (who may not have brought in a book)

  • Check out books from your library over the summer and post dates that you will be open for book check in/out during the summer (if possible).

  • Publish Recommended Summer Reading Book Lists

  • Partner with teachers to create your own suggested reading lists.

  • Have a promotion like 'Read Four or More' over the summer.  Students that read four or more books over the summer and fill out a short book review for each book can receive a small prize in the fall.

  • Share information about local bookstores' reading promotions (like Barnes & Noble's summer program: read any 8 books, get a free book Barnes & Noble Summer Reading )

  • If you have an eBook collection, promote it for summer reading!

  • Create a one-stop webpage to gather links to all your suggestions. Share that page through an email blast to parents.

Peeps in History

The International Baccalaureate HL History of the Americas students, at Portage High School, have spent 4 years in this rigorous research program, including the culminating IB Extended Essay and IB Exams. To bring a little lighthearted fun to their history experience, this week they created Peeps in History of significant events in the 20th Century.

In honor  of the role of the Library Media Learning Commons program in the students' success, their teacher, Rick Searing, renamed the library "The Library Peep-ia Learning Commons" for the week!

MAME Member attends
ALA National Library Legislative Day

Fellow MAME members, I was fortunate to be selected as one of two librarians from Michigan to attend the 40th ALA National Library Legislative Day May 4-6, 2014 funded by Gale Cengage.  It was an amazing advocacy experience and I hope you will consider participating in the future.

On Sunday, May 4th, I attended a training session at the ALA D.C. headquarters where I learned how to approach legislators and staffers as an advocate. It was an insider's guide to everything an advocate should know.

Monday, May 5th, was a full day of learning about the key issues and bills under consideration by Congress that are supported by the ALA. Most directly pertain to funding for schools and libraries such as ESEA, Library Services Technology Act(LSTA), early learning programs, E-Rate, Network Neutrality, Open Access, Email Privacy Act, USA Freedom Act, and the Workforce Investment Act(WIA).

Tuesday May 6th, was Advocacy Day. Our Michigan delegation met Senator Stabenow for her "Hello Michigan" coffee after which four of us met with one of her staffers to begin our advocacy day.  I went on to have meetings with John Conyers' staffer in the Congressman's office followed by a meeting with Kerry Bentivolio's staffer. Bentivolio is from the 11th Congressional District where I live.

The interactions I had while in Washington were some of the most positive and rewarding I have experienced. I shared our district's story of ongoing support for our library programs. In discussions with Congressional staffers, I pointed out how students will benefit from the support and passage of these important bills. The staffers were well prepared and had a deep understanding of their boss's position on the issues. It was very refreshing to have an open and honest dialogue on political issues.

I was grateful for the opportunity to attend the NLLD and to take the district's story to Washington. Please consider attending the 41st ALA NLLD in Washington, D.C. in 2015.

Thank you, Gale Cengage for your support of our school library programs.

Bittersweet news ~
Jeri Sutton retires.

"After completing my Bachelor of Arts degree at Western Michigan University, I obtained a job as the 7-12 LMS at Galien (Michigan) Public Schools. After three years there, I took the high school LMS job at Albion  High School where I did my "library thing" for twenty-seven years, while earning my Master of Science in Librarianship from WMU. During my last year in Albion, I served as the district K-12 LMS. In February of 2005, I accepted the position of LMS at Harper Creek High School. I've loved this field, sometimes in spite of and sometimes because of all the changes that have occurred. I will miss my library colleagues, my teaching colleagues, and my students. But new books, new technologies, and new adventures are calling to me. So, after thirty-nine years as a professional LMS, I say farewell." --  Jeri Sutton
