President's Column

Happy School Library Month to all!

In honor of National Library Week, the University of Michigan Libraries and the Ann Arbor Public Library hosted events with ALA President Barbara Stripling which included signings of the Declaration for the Right to Libraries. I was able to represent MAME at these events and brought along the three infographics for school library advocacy (which are found on the MAME website). I had great conversations with attendees and hope that this helped raise awareness about the state of school libraries in Michigan.  During Barbara's town hall meeting at UofM, I was able to speak about the lack of support for Michigan's school libraries and the recent EDTrust Midwest report showing that Michigan is one of only six states with negative reading improvement in the last decade.  (See the Detroit Free Press editorial of April 13th.

April also marked the announcement of our new State Librarian. Congratulations to Randy Riley on his new role as State Librarian. MAME looks forward to a continued positive relationship with the Library of Michigan and working with Randy. On behalf of MAME, I would like to wish Nancy Robertson all our best as she retires. MAME members have enjoyed working with her and appreciate all of her support!

In addition, MACUL announced its new Executive Director Mark Smith. Ric Wiltse will retire as of July 30 and will now take on the role of Executive Director Emeritus. Ric has been a friend and supporter of MAME for many years. On behalf of MAME, I'd like to extend MAME's thanks and best wishes.

The dates for MAME's Summer Institute have been set. It should be a fun learning opportunity.  I hope to see you there.

The MAME Conference Committee is continuing to work hard towards a fantastic conference in Ann Arbor this fall! The call for programs is out. Please consider presenting at the conference and sharing some of your great work.  In addition, it is not too late to get involved to help with the conference.  If you are interested, contacted Gwenn Marchesano at gmarchesano@mimame.org.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Spring!

Please contact me if you have ideas or questions.

All my best,

Kathy Lester, MAME President, 2014

Outreach: Annual Report for your Library
Creating an annual report for your school library is a great way to share all of the great things that happened in your school library during the school year.  Sharing this report with staff, administrators, and the school board is a great way to advocate for your library.  Below are some ideas for helping to create an annual report.

  • Jennifer La Garde (aka Library Girl) wrote a great blog post last May about School Library Annual Reports. Click here for the blog post.
  • Rather than reinvent the wheel, review the evidence of practice from your SL21 evaluation
  • Refer to Shelley Lazarus's blog which served multiple purposes to showcase what her students were accomplishing in the library and also used for her performance evaluation. (This could be an ongoing project accumulated next year. By May of 2015,you'd have a robust site to share.)
MAME 41 Pre-Conference
Pre-Conferences offer in-depth opportunities for sharing information.  Do you have something to share on. . .
  • Connecting to the community and gaining their support...?

  • Developing literacy...?

  • Leading your school and district in implementing Common Core...?

  • Integrating technology with curriculum...?

  • or another vital topic...?

Then we want to hear from you!

(Pre-Conferences are 3 hours in length and will be held on Wednesday, October 22nd.)

Michigan Welcomes New
StateLibState Librarian!

Spring is in the air and with spring comes changes and new beginnings. It is with saddened but deeply appreciative hearts, we say goodbye to our State Librarian, Nancy Robertson and warmly welcome Randy Riley as he takes the role. Nancy worked diligently to promote and support all types of libraries, particularly school libraries, within the state. We, as library media specialists, were incredibly fortunate to have such a visionary, insightful and determined person advocating on behalf of school library professionals, programs and facilities for our students. Nancy's support and hard work has been a true gift to strengthening educational opportunities for students.

Although the person is changing, Nancy's goals and mission for school libraries will be in good hands. Randy Riley comes to the position from MeL and has been not only a supporter of MAME but an active participant and presenter. Randy presented at last year's MAME spring and summer workshops and has attended the annual conferences representing and promoting the excellent resources MeL has to offer. His enthusiastic participation in  past experiences with MAME has shown support for school libraries and library media specialists. MAME members wish to extend our sincerest appreciation to Nancy and congratulations to Randy!
Library Blogs!

Okemos High School Teacher Librarian and Elementary LMC Coordinator, Sandy Fields, has joined the social media world by reaching out to students and parents with a new library blog! Balancing Books & Technology, Fields' new venture to promote library events and happenings, has been up since February and gaining popularity all the time. The posts range from author visits to tech trends. Sandy has been quite surprised and of course pleased at how many teachers, students, and parents have checked out the blog.

Take a minute to read her blog, Balancing Books & Technology! Who knows, you might pick up a useful tech hint! Thanks for sharing, Sandy!

Calling All Retirees!!
MAME 4Ever needs you to join in our gang to work (a bit) helping new professionals in small to medium ways, which are always appreciated. We are needed for a couple of weeding projects, and were aren't talking gardens! Both projects will have us freshening up school library collections, one is located in the Detroit metro area and the other is in Marshall. Please email Terry Belcher if you think this would be fun - the library media specialist provides lunch for us and we have a ball helping out all day - or whatever portion you can offer.

Secondly, we are planning our annual "Not going back to school" trip for the week after Labor Day, which is early this year!  We will be in Tawas on the beach and you can choose to come for the whole time or whatever days you can, from Tuesday, September 2nd through Saturday the 6th with most of us Tues-Friday.  We will have a group rate and do things together or in small groups with hikes, shopping, happy hour-ing, dining or BBQing, strolling the marina, lighthouse touring, and maybe boating, too.  Last year we were on the sunset side of the state, and this year we will be watching the sun rise (maybe).  Contact Annette Haley to get on the list!

The attendees decide on the next year's location at our final dinner together on each trip, so if you want to have input, show up and be counted!

We retirees advocate for our profession! Come join us!  Annette and Teri (click to email)
