President's Column

New Year, New Beginnings...

This year is one of new beginnings for me: I started working in a different middle school library this past fall,East Middle School in Plymouth-Canton; and I am now starting in a new role in MAME as President for 2014.  As with most new beginnings, I have been reflecting and trying to set some priorities for the coming year.

For MAME, I would like to focus on Professional Development for members as well as Advocacy for School Libraries in our state. Fortunately, MAME has some great people involved in putting together some wonderful professional development opportunities for our members this year. Sue Lay, Past-President, of MAME is planning the Spring Workshop; watch the MAME listserv for the announcement on specifics of date and location. Kay Wejrowski will again be planning this year's Summer Institute. Everyone who attended the Summer Institute planned by Kay last year had great reviews of the session; so, we are looking forward to another wonderful learning opportunity this summer. Finally, Gwenn Marchesano, President-Elect, is already gotten off to a great start in putting together an excellent Annual Conference for Fall 2014. Watch for some announcements about the Annual Conference from Gwenn.

I will try to pass on other Professional Learning opportunities to members as well. The SIGMS group of MACUL has 3 pre-conferences planned on March 12 in Grand Rapids. You can find the details below. This summer's  ALA Annual Conference will be held in Las Vegas from June 26 - July 1, while  ISTE's Annual Conference will be held in Atlanta from June 28 - July 1. I would recommend either of these conferences and, remember, if you sign up for ISTE, please indicate MAME as your affiliate organization.

In terms of Advocacy for School Libraries in our state, I will need everyone's assistance in getting the word out to advocate for your own students and their libraries as well as for all school libraries. There is no question that our state has suffered a significant loss in school library services to our students in the past 10 years. I put some specifics in my report to AASL and I shared this report earlier this month on the MAME listserv. You can find MAME's report to AASL at this link.

This year, I will continue to work with the Outreach Subcommittee that MAME has formed with the Library of Michigan to educate others about the role of the school librarian through presenting at other conferences and submitting articles to other educational journals. In addition, each month this subcommittee will submit articles (LMS: Get Loud) to this newsletter with ideas for you to advocate for your own program. Please use these ideas or your own ideas to make sure the school community understands your contributions and your role towards student achievement.

In addition, I will continue to look for other ways to advocate for school libraries. Currently, I have sent requests to both MACUL and MRA (Michigan Reading Association) to have signings of the Declaration for the Right to Libraries at their conferences. MACUL has agreed!  MRA has a board meeting next week. As the details of this get worked out, I may need volunteers to assist with the signings. If so, please consider volunteering! We may be a small group at this point, but, I believe we can make an impact if we work together.

Which brings me to my final point -- MAME needs you!! We have several positions open on the MAME Board and the MAME Conference Committee. [See the article below] Please consider getting involved. Several years ago, I responded to one of MAME's general requests for help and I have never regretted it. I have reinforced some old friendships, made some incredible new friendships, and have felt good about contributing to something that I feel strongly about.

If you have any ideas for advocating or how MAME can better serve its members, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Looking forward to a good year!

All my best,

Kathy Lester, MAME President, 2014

Loving MAME!
a letter from Sue Lay, past-president
Dear MAME Members:

I am going to apologize in advance for gushing, but it is almost February, and we should always celebrate what we love.

I love MAME. I love all of its parts, what it stands for, the people, their ideals and what we do for our students and staff. You inspire me to be a better librarian.

MAME and its members have gone through challenging times, declining numbers, program slashing and some organizational stress, losing our executive director. We continue to hold our own, we are smaller, but mighty. Your officers work diligently on your behalf, looking out for the whole organization. There have been a couple of missteps along the way, and are bound to be more, so please be patient.

MAME is an association of volunteers. The old adage is true, many hands make for light work. And, I can say from experience, new members, quickly become friends and I look forward to seeing them again, along with long-time members. Just walking into a meeting, I get that "ah" feeling. You get me!

We share that common bond-our love of what we do. It isn't always easy, but we charge ahead, and do a darned good job.

So, if you are new-welcome. If you have been a member and someone has not reached out-we're glad you are a member. We need you. What you do makes a difference. So, if you are thinking about how you can help - please volunteer, consider this a request for your help. Call someone on the board and ask how you can help.

Okay, I'll jump off my soapbox. Thanks for listening. I hope you all have a safe winter and stay warm.

Sue Lay, Past President
SVHS Library Hosts Many Events
"Read for Peace - Work for Justice."
Each year, the Swan Valley High School library promotes a theme selected by an advisory council of students. Peace is the theme of the year and to help promote their theme, the SVHS library hosted author / illustrator Wendy Anderson Halperin. Lessons across the curriculum have been inspired by the award winning children's author's book Peace. Halperin will be back in March to continue working with their "Read for Peace - Work for Justice" program.

Students are building wooden Adirondack chairs and then others are painting peace themes on them. They will be auctioned off to raise money for the CAN Council.

Great Michigan Reads Author to Visit
Author Steve Luxenberg, this year's Great Michigan Reads author, has been touring the state with his book Annie's Ghost. Luxenberg uses his journalistic skills to write this compelling book about his mother and the sister she kept secret. He uses personal letters, photographs, and official records "to piece together the story of my mother's motivations, my aunt's unknown life, and the times in which they lived." Steve Luxenberg will visit Swan Valley High School library on January 28th.

"Vikings 4 Life"
Swan Valley High School students learned a lesson in safe driving from the famous crash test dummies, Vince & Larry and Cricket the Ticket. "Vikings 4 Life" is the safe driving theme SWVH implemented with the state "Strive 4 a Safe Drive" program. The program helps teach and promote
safe driving, from wearing seat belts and driving phone free to avoiding drinking and driving and all driving distractions. SVHS library facilitated this year's state program which is funded by Ford, AAA, and the Office of Highway Safety.

Read more about Swan Valley High School's library in the article posted on ALA's @your Library site.

Outreach to School Board

In honor of the fact that January is School Board Recognition month, this month's outreach article focuses on ideas to advocate for school libraries with your school board members.  Some ideas are listed below.  If you have any additional ideas, please send them to a member of the Outreach Committee.

  • Have the Teacher's Union or other group donate books to the school library in honor of School Board Recognition Month.  Have a certified librarian accept the books and mention the importance of school libraries and their contribution towards student achievement.
  • Invite school board members to library events/activities and / or student project presentations (projects that school librarian has co-taught or collaborated with a teacher).  Be sure to take pictures and submit to your local newspaper!
  • Ask school board members to get involved with reading month or other library activities.
  • Provide school board members with articles about the importance of school libraries.
  • Have students present at a school board meeting on a recent project and how they used the library
  • Present at a school board meeting on how the school library is helping to meet the school board's goals or present on the resources and services of the library  that the library provides or any recent additions or changes.
  • Have your SL21 certification be awarded at a School Board Meeting.

Calling All Retirees!!
MAME 4Ever needs you to join in our gang to work (a bit) helping new professionals in small to medium ways, which are always appreciated. We are needed for a couple of weeding projects, and were aren't talking gardens! Both projects will have us freshening up school library collections, one is located in the Detroit metro area and the other is in Marshall. Please email  Terry Belcher if you think this would be fun - the library media specialist provides lunch for us and we have a ball helping out all day - or whatever portion you can offer.

Secondly, we are planning our annual "Not going back to school" trip for the week after Labor Day, which is early this year!  We will be in Tawas on the beach and you can choose to come for the whole time or whatever days you can, from Tuesday, September 2nd through Saturday the 6th with most of us Tues-Friday.  We will have a group rate and do things together or in small groups with hikes, shopping, happy hour-ing, dining or BBQing, strolling the marina, lighthouse touring, and maybe boating, too.  Last year we were on the sunset side of the state, and this year we will be watching the sun rise (maybe).  Contact Annette Haley to get on the list!

The attendees decide on the next year's location at our final dinner together on each trip, so if you want to have input, show up and be counted!

We retirees advocate for our profession! Come join us!  Annette and Teri (click to email)

Goodreads

Free

iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini, Android

I have been using Goodreads for about a year to keep track of the books I've read and to share the titles with friends on Facebook. I have a terrible time remembering book titles so it is a great reference for when I'm recommending titles to friends or colleagues. Goodreads is also available as an app for iPhones, iPads and Androids. You have the usual great Goodreads features of keeping track of books you have read, are currently reading and want to read. In addition, the app offers titles that are the most downloaded and recently uploaded by other Goodreads users. There is also a "Listopia" with lists such as "Best German Authors," "Best Ending" and "2014 Young Adult Sequels" to name a few.  More lists by genre are also available. But one of the features will be very useful to avid readers. There is a Scan button so that you can scan the barcode on a book and save it for future reference. That could by very handy while in a library or bookstore. Reading rules!!!
