Summer is fast approaching. It will be a time of rest, rejuvenation, and for many, re-education. Not reeducation in the dystopian science fiction sense, but rather MAME and MACUL's SIGMS is joining forces in the creation of a new paradigm of summer professional development.
MAME will be hosting a fantastic Summer Institute at the Saginaw ISD, Effective Libraries and Embedded Librarianship on July 24. The program, sure to be a hit and spearheaded by our new Summer Institute chairperson Kay Wejrowski, is going to be bookended by a new MACUL offering: The Best of MACUL. The Best of MACUL is a day of presentations that were reviewed by MACUL attendees as being among the very best that were offered at the 2013 MACUL conference.
For those who choose to participate in two or three days of professional development, there will be a "treasure hunt" of sorts for the evening following Summer Institute. You will have the opportunity to explore from Frankenmuth to Saginaw to experience some of the very best that eastern Michigan has to offer.
On a more serious note, please take a moment each week to contact your legislators about issues in education funding and school reform and make your opinions known. They say that every phone call or written letter is counted as 10 people who feel the same way about an issue. Even though message boards and opinion pages say about teachers that "they work for us", Michigan legislators really and truly do have to answer to the voting public.

E-learning has become a prevalent and necessary vehicle of information and librarians are now facing the challenge of integrating e-learning into the library media curriculum. E-Learning in Libraries: Best Practices, recently published by Rowman & Littlefield, provides librarians with nine exemplary ideas for all types of libraries.
Gigi Lincoln is proud to be a contributor to E-Learning in Libraries: Best Practices. Her chapter is on "E-Learning and Holocaust Education in a School Library."

QR Codes in the library!
Amy Bontekoe, media specialist at Houghton Lake High School, shares a creative way to integrate technology and books to get students excited about reading. Using www.qrstuff.com, Amy creates QR codes that contain riddles about books. Each riddle will lead students to another book until finally they hit the treasure, a KING size candy bar hidden behind the last book. Twice a week students at Houghton Lake High School become book sleuths using these QR codes. Students have to solve the riddle to locate the next book and QR code. The scavenger hunt usually consists of three books and has helped teach students how to use the catalog, the library, and how to find books in a fun, and independent way! Amy sets up the scavenger hunt either before or after school and then announces at the beginning of the day that "a QR code is on the loose!" Students RACE to find the first QR code on a hot pink piece of paper in the hall. Once students crack this code, they head to the library catalog in search of the next book. If students don't have a QR reader they borrow a phone with one or join another student to go on the hunt. Amy does pay for the KING size candy bars herself but says the students' excitement and learning is worth much more than the cost of candy!
