President's Column
| |
Progress is being made on the Fall conference. Kathy Lester, our President Elect, is putting together a fantastic slate of speakers and authors including David Smalls and Sarah Stewart as our featured authors, Nancy Robertson the Librarian of Michigan for our general membership meeting, Barbara Stripling ALA President will open the conference, and Timothy Shanahan Professor of Urban Education at University of Illinois-Chicago will be the closing keynoter.
While we had discussions about sharing resources with the Michigan Library Association, we both came to the conclusion that 2013 would not work. We are still in contact with them with hopes of making more inroads for collaboration in the future.
We are really excited that the MACUL SIGMS has completely sold out their preconference. I look forward to hearing about the excellent learning that takes place. We are excited about collaborating with SIGMS with our summer institute in July. Kay Wejrowski of Swan Valley will be taking over for Evelyn Freeman as Summer Institute Chairperson. Many thanks to Evelyn for leading some excellent professional development over the years.

ASCD WHOLE CHILD INITIATIVE The Whole Child Initiative School Improvement Tool could be a strong tool to determine school library efficacy as opposed to or in conjunction with SL21
- Healthy - Each student enters school healthy and learns about and practices a healthy lifestyle
- Safe - Each student learns in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for students and adults
- Engaged - Each student is actively engaged in learning and is connected to the school and broader community
- Supported - Each student has access to personalized learning and is supported by qualified, caring adults
- Challenged (CCSS) - Each student is challenged academically and prepared for success in college or further study and for employment and participation in a global environment
- Sustainability - Schools implementing a whole child approach use collaboration, coordination, and integration to ensure the approach's long term success
NATIONAL CENTER FOR LITERACY EDUCATION This group is promoting the creation of Centers for Literacy Education, the national movement to enrich literacy learning for all students. By sharing their ongoing work, they provide a window into how to build the organizational conditions that foster deeper learning in every discipline. In return for their willingness to share, CLE's are eligible to receive expert advice about how to pursue their professional goals and recognition of their ongoing efforts from leading education organizations and in local media outlets.
Centers for Literacy Education (CLE) are collaborative groups who are willing to publicly commit to: This organization is something we could consider becoming a part of because we are heavily involved in everything they are talking about. Tom Tom Stream, MAME President |

MAME Spring Seminar 2013 ~ a success! | |
We Can Make an App for That!
Saturday, March 16th almost thirty MAME members and non-members gathered at Marshall Middle School to learn how to develop our own apps. Andrew Vanden Heuvel demonstrated various ways to create apps we can use for anything from basic games to library promotion.
After lunch, the group moved to Marshall High School where we were joined by Randy Riley from MeL. Randy unveiled the new look of MeL and explained the upcoming changes we can expect. MeL's new look doesn't mean a new MeL, we will still enjoy access to wonderful databases, test prep resources, vetted websites, and all the other vital resources. Searches have become more encompassing and Gateways appear more user-friendly. Overall, the facelift of MeL is intended to make the already vital resources more accessible and easy to use for all.
Thank you to past, past MAME president, Rachel Markel for organizing a fascinating day of learning and collaborating for library media specialists and others in related fields. We walked away with excellent resources, new knowledge, and information to share with our colleagues.

Advocacy Article
|
The March issue of School Library Journal has an article about the latest study showing that School Librarians have an impact on student achievement. The article "Latest Study: A Full-Tme School Librarian Makes a Critical Difference in Boosting Student Achievement" can be found here. The article starts with the analogy "Imagine trying to teach kids how to swim in an empty pool." Use this article and others that have appeared in this Advocacy Article column to inform your school community: board members, administrators, teachers, and parents about the importance of School Librarians. Another great advocacy tool is the infographic created by Library Research Service (LRS). You can find the infographic, (shown above) which was designed to give school library advocates a tool to highlight all of the previous school library impact studies, here.

| App of the Month | |
Below are this month's featured
"apps of the month". If you would like to suggest an app, please email your idea to: Judy Hauser
judy.hauser@oakland.k12.mi.us
Any app will be considered whether it is for productivity, utility, or fun.
Field Trip
Free for iOS and Android
Field Trip is an app from Niantic Labs (Google). I just installed it on my iPhone and have not had a chance to use all of the features but I do see some potential. Field Trip helps you discover interesting places near your location. Some of the reviews have indicated that many of those places are stores and restaurants but historical information is also available. Several sources provide the content and it looks like Arcadia Publishing provides most of the historical content. A "card" is supposed to pop up on your screen with details on interesting places close by. If you have a headset or bluetooth connected Field Trip will even read information to you. I'm curious to see how this will work and I hope it works well because it is a good idea. Happy "travels!" |
