President's Column
| |

Wow! What a month October was! It was such a rewarding experience to see MAME members from all over Michigan. The conference committee did such a great job! Thank you for all of your hard work. Liz Kolb started the conference with her story about a teacher that made a difference in her life, by asking her, "What did she like to do?" Her presentation reminds us, we are in the perfect situation to differentiate and help our students succeed. Several MAME members received recognition for their contribution to the profession. Congratulations to award winners: Kathleen McBroom, Barbara LaBeau, Melissa White, Cynthia Kleinheksel, Tim Staal, Denise Brandt, Julie Harris, Kay Wejrowski, Karen Becknell and Dee Gwaltney. Consider submitting an application for an award next year. It is the perfect way to advocate for your program. At the closing Will Richardson implored us to make learning more meaningful for our students by requiring deeper thinking of them. Leave detail questions to a google search. Watch mimame.org for handouts from sessions to keep the ideas flowing.
So, now that the conference is over, we have made it through Halloween, and parent conferences are imminent, or, almost past, take some time to reflect. Is there something you have been meaning to do, that you haven't done yet this year? How can you make it happen? Is there one idea you learned at MAME 39 that you want to try? Just get out there and do it!

From the President-Elect

If you ever presented at a MAME event, please raise your metaphorical hand.
If you ever volunteered, please raise your hand.
If you ever served either on the board or the conference committee, please raise hand.
MAME is not me or the previous presidents or the executive committee or the board.
MAME is YOU.
You are not going anywhere and neither is MAME. As Mark Twain is supposed to have said " reports of MAME's demise are premature."
During the past president's luncheon at conference, a recurring theme was NETWORK. MAME is working on networking more with other organizations to help them and help us to provide professional development and relationships for you.
MAME initiated the development of the MACUL's new SIGMS in order to give school librarians an official voice in MACUL. This new SIG will serve as a liasion between the MACUL board and the MAME board.
We are also in discussions with the Michigan Library Association regarding the feasability of sharing resources at our fall conferences.
Your executive board will continue to look for new ways to create professional networks between MAME and other organizations whenever it makes sense for MAME to do so.
That being said, MAME is always looking for new people to join us on the board. There are always openings, so if you are interested in learning more, contact your region representative.
IF after looking up the contact info for your region rep, you discover that your region is not represented, you could be the next region representative.
The conference committee is always looking for new people with fresh ideas, as well.
We will be on the lookout for people to ask to join us, but don't be afraid to ask us.
Just check the website for any of the board members contact info. We will happy to talk to you.
Tom Stream, MAME President-Elect |
Congratulations, Winners!

MARGARET GRAZIER AWARD FOR CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROFESSION
The Margaret Grazier Award is given to recognize a group who has made a significant contribution to the general principles of media in education at the state and local levels.
This year this award goes to the SL21 Writing Team. Following the completion of the 21st Century School Library Media Center video and approved Program Guideline revision, the School Library Initiative Committee explored ways to enhance and promote high quality school library programs in Michigan. This team spent countless hours working together to develop the School Library 21 guidelines for evaluating high quality school library media programs that more than 80 schools have taken the challenge to meet and become certified as SL21 library media centers.

COLLABORATION AWARD
The School Librarian/Teacher Collaboration Award is awarded to a school librarian who works in a collaborative manner with a teacher or group of teachers to create a curriculum-related program, unit, or event that incorporates the school library's resources, the research process, reading advocacy, literacy support, and/or technology integration. Denise and the team of first grade teachers at Lone Pine Elementary, in Bloomfield Hills, participate each fall in the International Baccalaureate theme of "How We Express Ourselves." The teachers and the school librarian work together to teach and guide students through the Super 3 research model as students learn about various forms of communication and complete a six week research project. The MAME conference was amazing! My head is still swimming in an attempt to process all of the wonderful information I received over the course of the three days. Every session I attended was so valuable. I am humbled and impressed at all of the things going on in the school libraries around the state. Both of our keynote speakers inspired and challenged me to think differently about education and to try something new in my library program. All of the sessions were great, but one of the most meaningful for me was the elementary shop talk session. With so few colleagues nearby, it was great to just be with others that do what I do every day. I was validated and challenged by the conversations that revolved around our hot topics. I found myself wishing we could get together once a month and I wasn't the only one feeling that way. There was talk about using our listserv more or a type of chat room through the MAME web site. These are great ideas, and I'd like to add one more. Write an article for this section of your newsletter! Like our President Elect Tom Stream said in closing at MAME, "you are all MAME." It doesn't have to be a long article, just share your favorite lessons and ideas with those of us that would love to hear them! By: Lori Minnard Portage Public School Elementary Teacher Librarian

School Libraries Changing with Move to Digital Resources
An October 30th article from eSchool News discusses the changing role of the school library. A quote from the article: "People often say that the library is going away," McConnell said. "It's really not - it's a critical piece. It's a place for community, collaboration, and it's a place to find partners to help you in whatever literacy you're trying to increase. That may be literacy in resources, media creation-those services are all there."
You can find an online copy of the article here.

Judy Hauser, Information Media Consultant and MAME member, received a government appointment to the Library of Michigan Board of Trustees. The three year term begins this month. Congratulations to Judy!! _________________________________________ Together with two academic librarians from the University of Pittsburgh, Margaret Lincoln (Lakeview Schools District Librarian) co-edited Designing Online Learning: A Primer for Librarians. The book was recently published by ABC CLIO/Libraries Unlimited and favorably reviewed in the October issue of Teacher Librarian.
_________________________________________ Cheers to our own Kathy Lester, winner of the Library of Michigan's Annual State Librarian's Excellence Award. Parker Middle School in Howell is the FIRST school library to win this award! On Thursday, November 8th, I attended the luncheon celebrating Kathy and her staff, and their efforts to collaborate to create a vital presence at Parker. In addition to a beautiful trophy, Parker received a monetary award from a private donor to further enhance their already dynamic library program. Way to go Kathy!
Sue Lay, MAME President From Kathy: Thank you, Sue, for your cheers! I feel especially honored (and humbled) because I know there are great School Librarians in Michigan that really deserve this honor even more than I; however, I hope that with this award we can put some focus on School Libraries and build some advocacy for our profession! Every school NEEDS a certified school librarian! From MDE press release: "It's a thrill to make this year's award to a school library" said State Superintendent Mike Flanagan. "Libraries in schools are of paramount importance in helping Michigan's K-12 students succeed in their educational endeavors, so that they can be career and college ready."
