ALL PLANS BY THE WAYSIDE!

When I last wrote, I had traveled from Mexico back to Indiana, and, though I didn't mention it at the time, on to Pittsburgh.  I had been there less than a week when I went off on a Memorial Day jaunt, a bike ride along the river.  Unfortunately, I never got to the river path because I ignominiously crashed on the concrete ramp leading to a sharp turn I couldn't make.

It's so ironic that I've trekked through dark caves in Borneo, and been hang gliding over Rio de Janiero, not to mention traveling into the Mexican desert with people I barely knew, and nothing harmful happened.

However this time, I ended up with a compound fracture of my right wrist, now artistically pinned together by a highly competent surgeon.  Fortunately my friends, Titus and Alida took care of me at the scene, and I am forever indebted to them for sharing their home with me during my recovery.

All my fingers work, yet regrettably I didn't manage to respond to all of you who wrote following my last newsletter.
(couldn't dance or drive either, for over a month)

I love getting your comments, so keep 'em coming, and hopefully we'll catch up by email or in person before too long.

What's next? Family reunions and a wedding, then I return to Pittsburgh in August for what I hope is the final checkup.  I'll be ecstatic to discard this brace (so comfortable in hot weather!) And yes, I realize I'll probably have to give up cartwheels on the beach, but otherwise I'm fine.
GALLERY CRAWL IN PITTSBURGH

Last Friday night the streets were teeming with art lovers, and perhaps a few of the merely curious, who popped in and out of galleries along Penn and Liberty.  It was a tribute to culture in the city since the Pirates' baseball game was occurring simultaneously across the river.  The most provocative exhibition, in my opinion, is The Koraput Survivors Project, a collaboration between Lynn Johnson, National Geographic photographer, and Jen Saffron, writer.

Anil, Koraput Survivor by Lynn Johnson

An example of the power of photojournalism, it tells the story of a group of Christians, including many "untouchables," who were chased from their village in India because they wouldn't recant and become Hindu.
Homeless and destitute, they made their way to Koraput, where, thanks to overseas donations, they have purchased a small piece of land and plan to build a church. Jen published the full story in the Post Gazette. The exhibit continues until September 1, and you can send aid through this link.

Once again, remember to take care of your special selves, follow your dreams, and express your love fully to those around you. After all, time is passing, and as I've recently learned, we're more fragile than we think.

Abrazos y besos,

Elena

MUSE BRIEFS:

Glass

Bless their hearts, my loving friends came to take me out occasionally during the time I couldn't drive.  One excursion was to the Phipp's Conservatory Summer Flower show, Glass in the Gardens.  Above is a detail of one of the leaded glass "columns" poised among the flowers. One of my favorites, was this bromeliad, appropriately named "Blue Tango."
