Patty's Perennial Picks for the Shade
By Patty Lynch, Plant Buyer
Don't you just love the shade on sunny summer days? Some may think that it is hard to grow attractive plants in the shade. You can have beautiful gardens in shady spots. These plants will actually thrive in your shady garden. They are available in a virtually limitless selection of sizes, shapes & colors.
Picture of the Aralia Sun King plant Aralia Sun King - This hardy, tropical looking golden beauty will brighten up the shade garden. It emerges with bright golden leaves on contrasting reddish colored stems. If it is given a few hours of sunlight, it will remain golden yellow all summer, in heavier shade it will be more lime green in color.

Tomato Plant Quirks

Oddly shaped tomato on the vine.       Sometimes a tomato doesn't turn out looking like you'd expect. Here are some common tomato quirks you might see that are caused by neither insects nor diseases - and what (if anything) you should do about them.
Oddly shaped fruit. Also called catfacing, this has nothing do with cats; the word describes puckering or misshapen fruit. It can happen to strawberries and tomatoes exposed to temperatures below 50 degrees when in bloom or setting fruit. The cool weather interferes with pollination and can cause the blossom to stick to the developing fruit, which keeps part of the fruit from developing. Meanwhile, another part does develop, so you end up with weird-looking and scarred fruit. It is most common on large-fruited types.

Bagworm life cycle stages
and Controlling Them
The adult Bagworm is a perennial moth like insect that resides on a number of evergreen plants as well as junipers in its larva stage. It causes extensive damage to plants and trees.
Bagworms winter over as eggs in the bag of the female from the year before. Therefore, your first measure of control can come by hand-picking all the bags from last year. These eggs hatch mid to late May through the end of June. Individual larvae drop from the bag on a strand of silk and either swing onto a branch or sail in the wind to another tree. Immediately upon landing, they build a silk-lined bag, often decorating it with bits of foliage. Larvae remain in the bag feeding, with only the head and thoracic segment extending out.
