WILDLIFE AND
WASHINGTON TAP WATER!!
Water flowing from a water hose
Please take care when using Washington tap water for our wildlife.
Washington tap water is now treated with chlorine. It should be fine to use in Birdbaths or dog/cat water bowls. The chlorine will dissipate into fumes with our heat and the sun. However, if using this for our fragile Hummingbirds, I suggest that you boil the water for several minutes to rid the chlorine from your homemade sugar solution.
The largest concern we have been dealing with are water gardens in backyards. Sudden fish kills have been reported. When cleaning your gardens out for spring or topping them off with Washington tap water, you now NEED TO add de-chlorinator to the water. This product is sold here at Hillermann's and easy to use.

Don't hesitate to call us if you have questions.
       Thanks, Sandi

7 Things You Can Do For Pollinators
Pollinator Partnership - www.pollinator.org

Picture of a honey bee flying to a flower
1. Plant for Pollinators
* Habitat opportunities abound on every landscape - from window boxes to acres of farms to corporate campuses to utility and roadside corridors - every site can be habitat.
* Utilize plants native to your area (or at the least, non-invasive for your area).
* Utilize the BeeSmart Pollinator Gardener App or the Ecoregional Planting Guides available on the pollinator.org website.
Decide among the plant material options - seeds, plugs, plants or a combination.
* Know your soil type and select appropriate plant material.
* Plant in clusters to create a "target' for pollinators to find.
* Plant for continuous bloom throughout the growing season from spring to fall.
* Select a site that is removed from wind, has at least partial sun, and can provide water.
* Allow material from dead branches and logs remain as nesting sites; reduce mulch to allow patches of bare ground for ground-nesting bees to utilize; consider installing wood nesting blocks for wood-nesting natives.

Japanese Beetle on a leaf
Japanese Beetles

As frightening as these little bugs can be, if they were not so destructive - their distinctive iridescent luster makes them almost "pretty." Numerous phone calls, reporting their return have been coming in. The question is almost always the same. "How do we make them go away?" Japenese Beetles are the adult stage of the White Grub, which can destroy your lawn. The adults will devour your treasured plants. The best defense is the eradication of the grubs by using a season long Grub Killer or by applying the beneficial product Milky Spore.
Milky Spore, once established can keep your lawn grub free for 15-20 years, AND, it's organic.
To alleviate the adult pests from your prize rose bushes or fruit trees, Japenese Beetle traps are available to safely lure them away. This organic trap uses a Pheromone to attract them to fly into the trap in which they cannot escape. This stops the life cycle of the beetle. So, consider Milky Spore or Japanese Beetle traps and come visit us for help.
