E-Newsletter 5/3/16

Dear Friends,

This is one of my more favorite weeks of the year... the threat of frost is over, and we celebrate Mother's Day! My mom has always been my best inspiration. Mom passed away in August of 2005, but her memory lives on in me every day of my life. Celebrate your Mom this weekend, and THANK her for all she has done for you.
Another thing I would like mention is vegetable gardening - and if you plant now, in a short time, you will be able to SHOP FOR GROCERIES IN YOUR OWN GARDEN!
The danger of frost is gone, so get your gardens started. We have some "Gardens to Go" (decorative and edible) ready for you to just place on your deck or patio. Need assistance? We are here for you.

Perennial Plant of the Week heading graphic

Peony bloom at Hillermann Nursery and Florist Peony

Perhaps the best-loved perennials, herbaceous peonies belong in almost every garden. Their sumptuous flowers -- single, semidouble, anemone centered or Japanese, and fully double -- in glorious shades of pinks and reds as well as white and yellow announce that spring has truly arrived. The handsome fingered foliage is usually dark green and remains good-looking all season long. Provide deep rich soil with plenty of humus to avoid dryness, and don't plant the crowns more than 2 inches beneath the surface. But these are hardly fussy plants. Where well suited to the climate, they can thrive on zero care.

20% OFF
Peony Plants

Good through 5/9/16. Excludes 5 gallon size and tree peonies.

EDIBLE ENDEAVORS:
Enjoy Fresh Vegetables and Herbs from Your Own Garden
By Sandi McDonald
Fresh picked garden vegetables
With cost savings on everyone's mind these days, there is never a better time to start a vegetable garden. Whether you have an expansive backyard ready to be transformed into a fertile field of edible delights, or just a few containers on your patio, you can grow fresh veggies and herbs in almost any sunny spot.
The first step is making sure you have the right amount of light. Sunlight is the most important thing to think about. The next thing to consider is the type of soil you're working with. Having organic matter, like compost, in the soil is crucial. It is easer to get good soil if you're starting with a clean slate. That's what makes raised beds work good. By assembling wood frames and adding good dirt, you're apt to see a better outcome than you would with problem soil.
Using containers is another option that saves time and space. We don't have as much time to garden and this is where containers come in. Popular for herbs, containers can also support a host of vegetables. Among the most popular vegetables to grow are tomatoes. This is a great way to involve children in gardening.

Industry Mourns Mel Bartholomew,
Mind Behind 'Square Foot Gardening'

PLEASANT GROVE, UT - Mel Bartholomew, the founding father and author of the Square Foot Gardening (SFG) concept and books, has died at 85 years old. Bartholomew graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in civil engineering. He operated his own engineering firm until he retired at the age of 42. When he took up gardening as a hobby, he developed the SFG system, leading him to write the first SFG book, which sold over a million copies. His SFG TV series ran on PBS, Discovery Channel and the Learning Channel for eight years. Bartholomew created the non-profit Square Foot Gardening Foundation to bring better gardening to people of all ages around the world with programs like the "Square Yard in the School Yard" project, which advocated for gardens at every school.
