Monarch Butterflies Could Use Your Help
By Tim Smith, Missouri Department of Conservation
The sight of a beautiful orange and black monarch butterfly in Missouri is likely to be less common this year, but you may be able to help the ones that do arrive here. A January 2014 report from their overwintering forest areas in Mexico indicated that only 1.65 acres were occupied by monarchs this winter. That makes this the third straight year of steep declines. The overwintering areas have been monitored since 1993 and the largest occupied area was 45 acres in 1996.

How to Plan a Vegetable Garden
Here's all you need to know about what to plant
in a garden filled with vegetables.
From Better Homes and Gardens
Starting a vegetable garden at home is an easy way to save money -- that $2 tomato plant can easily provide you with 10 pounds of fruit over the course of a season.
But planting a garden with vegetables also gives you the pleasure of savoring a delicious, sun-warmed tomato fresh from the garden. In almost every case, the flavor and texture of varieties you can grow far exceed grocery store produce.
Plus, growing vegetables can be fun. It's a great way to spend time with children or have a place to get away and spend time outdoors in the sun.

Companion Herbs for Vegetable Gardens
Many herbs are beneficial grown alongside vegetables as well as uses of their own.

Getting Dirty Can Be Good
Getting dirty isn't all bad! Get your kids and grand kids out to help and learn with you in the garden. We found this interesting article on Parents.com and wanted to share it with you.
The Dirty Truth
Playing in the soil may deliver more than just good unclean fun. According to what scientists call "the hygiene hypothesis," our society's overemphasis on cleanliness may block our exposure to beneficial bugs. The trillions of microorganisms that live inside us (including ones we pick up from our environment) "are doing something important for us," says Dr. Dorothy Matthews, a professor at The Sage Colleges. "Especially the ones in our gastrointestinal tract, where most of our immune response happens."

How to Build a Bee House
"Bee Houses" provide cover and places to raise young for bees. They're easy and fun to make, or can be purchased commercially from several vendors.
The Orchard Mason Bee is a wonderful little creature. It does not live in a nest like other bees; it lives in wooden blocks, but does not drill holes and destroy wooden items like other bees. It uses holes that are already available. The male Orchard Mason Bee can not sting and the female rarely stings.
How to build a bee house:
- With drill bits of various sizes (5/16th of an inch works best for Mason bees) simply take some scrap lumber
