Picture of a Downy Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker

Basics:
This bird can be identified by its white back, black nape, and black wings with white spotting. Another amusement on this species is its quick moves up and down the tree trunks.

Housing:
Mount your wooden birdhouse to the trunks of mature trees. There should be about 1- " inch hole for your woodpeckers to enter/exit.

Food:
You can get pretty close to these birds as they feed, due to their being quite brave. Add a Suet feeder, and Suet to get a close up view of these beauties feeding near your home! Suet is a great food source for all woodpecker species in our area.

How to attract:
Downy Woodpeckers are attracted to places where food is abundant

Fact:
This is the smallest Woodpecker in North America.

Tip:
Downy woodpeckers look very similar to hairy woodpeckers. Please remember that when distinguishing between the two, downy woodpeckers are smaller, with smaller bills.

Houseplant of the Week - picture of a houseplant with text graphic

White orchid blooms
Orchid

Orchids are a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants with blooms that are often colorful and fragrant. Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchid) is the most common of the Orchid family. Orchids need at least 40% humidity at all times. Watering is a bit tricky when growing your Orchids indoors, Orchids should be watered just as they begin to dry out. A pencil or a wooden skewer inserted into the soil will come out almost dry, indicating it's time to water again. To grow an orchid, you have to think like an orchid. Placing ice cubes on the soil surface for slow even watering as they melt works great for watering when needed.
The golden rule for orchid success is to duplicate the plant's natural conditions as closely as possible. In nature, most orchids are epiphytes, meaning they grow on other objects, clinging to rough bark or even stone. The showy orchids favored by most people are usually either phalaenopsis hybrids (so-called moth orchids) or dendrobium hybrids.

Microgreens and Sprouts:
What is the Difference

Microgreens and sprouts are trending everywhere from cooking shows and magazines to fancy restaurants and food trucks. But, here's our secret - you can grow microgreens and sprouts right in your kitchen for pennies!
Microgreens are young, leafy vegetables or herbs that are harvested just above the soil line when the plant is 1-2 inches tall. Microgreens include the first pair of leaves, called cotyledons, and one set of just developed "true" leaves. They are grown in media and are ready to harvest in about 7 to 14 days. Recent research has shown that the nutritional value of microgreens can be higher than mature plants, adding to their popularity with chefs and home gardeners. We have 3 varieties of microgreens seed from Botanical Interests: Red Winter Kale Heirloom, Savory Mix, and Sunflower Organic Heirloom.
Sprouts are young shoots from seeds, beans, legumes, and grasses that are not grown in media. The whole sprout can be eaten-seed, roots, and stem-and are ready to eat in about 3 to 5 days. Some of the most common sprouts are alfalfa, mung bean, radish, garbanzo, buckwheat, and fenugreek. They are nutritional powerhouses that contain a high concentrate of antioxidant nutrients. We have good selection of Botanical Interests sprout seeds and the Botanical Interests Seed Sprouter available in our Garden Center.
