 Mourning Dove
Basics: Mourning Doves are light grey and brown and generally muted in color. Males and females are similar in appearance. These are called Mourning Doves because of the mournful cooing sound they make.
Housing: A platform is most ideal for attracting mourning doves. The base should be 8 inches by 8 inches, with a ceiling height of 8 inches. Mourning doves are ground birds, for feeding and even nesting. They may also nest in shrubs within several feet off the ground.
Food: Seeds make up 99 percent of a Mourning Dove's diet, including cultivated grains and even peanuts, as well as wild grasses, weeds, herbs, and occasionally berries. They sometimes eat snails. Mourning Doves eat roughly 12 to 20 percent of their body weight per day, or 71 calories on average.
How to attract: Running water, millet, and platform houses are SURE to draw mourning doves to your property!
Fact: These birds are Monogamous. Both parents incubate and care for their young. You will rarely see a mourning dove without his/her partner nearby.
Tip: Winter feeding Tip: Site feeders in locations that offer birds shelter from wind and snow. Mourning Dove is a slower moving bird, shelter from raptor predators to the feeders is really important. This includes thick shrubs and evergreens as well.

Peace Lily
This week we're happy to present the Peace Lily as the houseplant of the week. This plant requires indirect sunlight, heavy watering, leaf misting, and trimming of unhealthy leaves on the plant. The peace Lily topped the list for removing all three of most common VOCs - formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene. This plant is awesome for promoting cleaner air, indoors! The basic Peace Lily Care tips below are followed by pruning, propagating and problem-solving this widely available plant. Since you can create one or two new plants yearly from an initial Peace Lily plant, it's cost-effective to provide the plant's minimum requirements.
Placement: Since east windows allow direct sun rays and south windows allow indirect, but all day, light in consider putting the plant in a room that's north or west facing instead. This is not saying that the plant should be right on a window sill. Keeping the Peace Lily six to eight feet away from a window helps keep light levels consistent as well.

Sprouts are by far more nutrient dense than their mature plant versions. This is because a seed is not just a baby plant, it is also a tiny package of nutrients and enzymes ready to spring into action at germination. While types of sprouts vary, generally, studies show sprouting increases the quality and/or quantity of enzymes, digestible protein and starch, B-vitamins, and amino acids. But best of all, you can grow sprouts any time, even in the dead of winter, and most sprouts are ready to eat in 2-7 days!
The Botanical Interests unique, easy-to-use seed sprouter lets you grow up to four varieties at once. Removable dividers keep varieties separated or allow you to grow more of one variety. The two trays allow you to sow new sprouting seeds every few days for a continuous supply. Trays are designed to hold optimal moisture for sprouting, while draining excess water. Bottom tray collects drained water and the entire unit works great for refrigerator storage. Made in the USA.
Come visit us and check out the Botanical Interests Seed Sprouter and great selection of sprout seeds available for you in our Garden Center.
