 American Goldfinch
Basics: The American Goldfinch is also known as the "Yellow finch" and can be identified by it's bright yellow coloring, nicely trimmed in black. These birds are a social flock that travel usually in large numbers. The bright coloring is most evident in early spring, as their winter color is a very dull version of the above.
Housing: Most yellow finches will not nest in a bird house, but may use a basket-style house with a fairly open top as a base for building a nest. They will sometimes also use a regular birdhouse for temporary shelter.
Food: Finches like smaller seeds such as aster, sunflower, dandelion and especially thistle.
How to attract: The easiest way to attract these birds is with a mesh bag feeder or a nyjer tube feeder full of Nijer Thistle Seeds.
Fact: A group of these birds are called a charm of goldfinches. Primarily, this species is monogamous!
Tip: If you want to see a spectacular show, place a good amount of seed out before a storm rolls in. American Goldfinches will go into a feeding frenzy when they sense the weather is about to get bad.

 Philodendron
Most Philodendrons are vine type houseplants that clamber in trees in their native habitat, thus, the common name - which translates as "tree lover." They grow well in most indoor lighting conditions at normal room temperature, or slightly warmer. Heart-leaf philodendron is one of the most popular and best foliage plants available and is often utilized for potted plants. These plants are a workhorse for removing all kinds of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Philodendrons are particularly good at battling formaldehyde from sources like particleboard. So besides being good for the indoors, this species comes in many different popular varieties. We carry many of them and invite you in to see what we have to offer.

Fighting Off Houseplant Pests
Ellen Zachos, Multi Briefs
If you grow houseplants, there will come a time when you discover a houseplant pest problem. Fortunately, by following just a few easy steps, you can keep your indoor garden clean and healthy.
1. When you buy a new houseplant, isolate it for a week or two and watch it carefully. Don't integrate it into your indoor garden until you're sure it's clean and healthy.
2. Keep your growing areas clean. Debris is a breeding ground for insects, so clean up dead leaves and flowers as they fall. If you discover an infestation, clean the area thoroughly, including window sills, containers and anything else in contact with the affected plants.
