Dear Friends, This week, I celebrate 37 years of marriage to my best friend Tim! It is a great addition the other celebrations this time of year. It was a day of joy and sadness on Tuesday as we said "goodbye" to our longest working employee, Charlie Kriete. Charlie has spent his entire career here at Hillermann's and we appreciate all that he has brought to the table. Charlie is a man of many talents and we wish him the best in retirement. He is looking forward to spending more time on the "farm" in Rhineland. The greatest surprise for Charlie is that ALL of his children were there to surprise him!! Most of them live fairly close to home, but he had one in from Rolla and another from Washington, DC. It was a great sendoff! Thank you so much Charlie, I'm sure we will be in touch! Enjoy a few photos of the celebration...

Poinsettias - Selection and Care Tips
Poinsettias are the most popular holiday plant used to brighten the inside of your home. There are hundreds of cultivars to choose from in shades of reds, pinks, white and many variegated forms and varied in height and shape.
The following will help you keep your poinsettia healthy through out the Winter.
Selecting Your Poinsettia
When selecting a poinsettia, choose tightly clustered, small central flowers with dark green foliage. The flower bracts, which are the colored leaves, should be of good size.
Bringing It Home
When taking your poinsettia home, be sure the plant is well wrapped before you take it outside. Never leave a poinsettia in a cold car, even for short periods.

Thanksgiving or Christmas Cactus - Using Clues to Solve the Mystery
Credit: Gail Vanik, Four Seasons Greenhouse and Nursery in Colorado
Except for when they bloom, Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus all look alike, right? Well, not exactly.
Both belong to the genus Schlumbergera which is a genus of rock dwelling cacti native to the rainforests of Brazil, and both are known as holiday cactus. That's where the similarities end. Their names, Thanksgiving cactus and Christmas cactus are derived from the holiday closest to their blooming periods. To confuse the matter a little more, there is also a Spring cactus, or Easter cactus that belongs to an entirely different family Hatiora gaertneri.
However, the plants are distinctly different. Without going into too much horticulture-speak, let me break it down into simple terms.

Attract and Assist the Birds
The cold is upon us! It's time to go the extra mile for our friends with feathers! Make your yard a friendly place for them to visit during these cold months. Birds need high caloric intake to keep their tiny bodies warm. Offering a mix of seeds and suet works well to supply the needed foods and attract several species. Clean and sanitize your existing feeders, and come grab some new ones! We have a gre at selection to choose from including squirrel proof types to deter those pesky thieves. Make sure your birdies have homes to stay nestled in to guard them from the winter chill, and they will be forever grateful! Don't forget the birds need water during the cold winter months when open water freezes. Water helps them clean and fluff their feathers for insulation, as well as refreshes them! We have heated birdbaths and heaters to add to a current birdbath to prevent frozen water! When un-frozen water is limited, your heated birdbath will be the main attraction.
