Thank you Veterans graphic with a picture of Bernie Hillermann (Korean War Veteran)

In March of 1950, at the age of 18, Hillermann's Co-Founder Bernie Hillermann joined the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to serve on a naval destroyer named the USS Brinkley Bass, which saw it's first major action in the Korean War. In May of 1951, the destroyer took part in a blockading and escort force in Wonsan Harbor. For 30 days, the warship continually shelled enemy installations and vectored in air strikes on other targets, all while enduring enemy fire. The Brinkley Bass returned to San Diego for repairs, but headed back to the battle in Wonsan Harbor two more times before the cease fire was declared in July of 1953. Bernie Hillermann served in the U.S. Navy into 1954. Back at home in Washington, Missouri, Bernie went on to be a partner with his brother Don at Hillermann Nursery and served as mayor of the city.

Mulch - Your Tree's Best Friend
From the Missouri Department of Conservation

Mulch being spread in a landscape bed      Mulching is one of the most valuable things a homeowner can do for a tree's health. Mulch is any material placed on the soil to conserve moisture and improve growing conditions. Common materials include wood chips, bark, pine needles and compost.
However, if mulch is applied to deeply or the wrong material is used, it actually can harm trees and other plants. Take a few minutes to read this flyer, and you'll be well on your way to improving your tree's health and appearance.

Turn Your Raised Garden Bed Into a Cold Frame
by Jeanne Grunert on DavesGarden.com

Picture of a cold frame from davesgarden.com
Turn your raised bed into an instant cold frame by adding a lid.

Gardeners with raised beds in which to grow vegetables seem to have all the luck. After all, raised beds are easier to tend, drain more quickly, and offer many other benefits. One additional benefit you may not have thought of is to turn your raised bed into a cold frame.

What is a cold frame? A cold frame is a removable, glass or plastic-covered frame that fits over the ground or over a raised bed. It protects plants from the elements and keeps them warmer inside the frame than in the surrounding areas using only natural heat sources.
