Dear Friends,
All the signs are here - the odd mix of weather, cold nights & even Daylight Savings Time - the winter months will soon be here. But, I'm not worried. Potted herbs line the kitchen window. There's a mini garden on the dining room table & tropical plants in the living room so I can reconnect with warm days spent in the garden. You too can find great ideas for indoor garden favorites among our fresh arrivals - just scroll down!
We look forward to seeing you in the nursery!

Pruning - Wait Until Trees Are Dormant
While you may be tempted to clean up your yard by trimming trees and shrubs, now is not the time.
* Pruning stimulates new growth, which cannot be adequately supported with the falling temperatures and daylight.
* Any spring-flowering tree or shrub should not be pruned until after blooming next spring. These plants usually set their buds in fall - pruning now will mean no flowers in the spring!
* Pruning creates wounds, which can invite pests and diseases, such as Oak Wilt. Pruning while bugs are dormant can prevent infestations while the tree is vulnerable.
* The best time to prune a tree is in late winter, just before the tree breaks dormancy. The cut will heal quickly during vigorous growth in early spring.
* Do not prune in spring while the tree's buds are developing. If the buds are beginning to swell, leave the tree alone until the leaves have grown to their mature size.

Composting
Using compost is a great natural way to enrich and improve the soil in your landscape beds and gardens. There is a very informative article on composting on the University of Missouri Extension website. We would like to share it with you.
Making and Using Compost
University of Missouri Extension Center
Compost is partially decomposed organic matter. It is dark and easily crumbled and has an earthy aroma. It is created by biological processes in which soil-inhabiting organisms break down plant tissue. When decomposition is complete, compost has turned to a dark-brown powdery material called humus. The processes occurring in a compost pile are similar to those that break down organic matter in soil. However, decomposition occurs much more rapidly in the compost pile because the environment can be made ideal for the microbes to do their work
