Prized Flower Bulbs - Not Palatable to Deer
It can be a great experience to see deer in a country setting by the woods or in a field. But, when they start to eat and destroy the prized plants in your gardens they can be down right obnoxious. Since fall is the time to plant spring blooming bulbs, below are a few varieties that the deer will leave alone when they sprout and bloom next spring.
Allium - Great for planting in small groups in borders in full sun to light shade. They make a long lasting cut flower. Cover with straw or mulch in winter.
Grape Hyacinths - These little beauties work well for naturalizing in borders, rockeries, woodland, between shrubs and between paving stones. Also good in tubs on a terrace or balcony. Best in full sun or partial shade.
The reliable Daffodil - there are many varieties to choose from. They are well known for not being bothered by animals. Plant them in full sun to part shade. You will be able to enjoy these cheerful beauties for many springs to come.

Landscaping - Accenting With Light
Autumn is here and with it, comes cooler nights and less light. Have you noticed that your lovely landscape is dark when you go to work? Soon it will also be dark when you return home at night. What if there was a way to present your home and landscape as the highlight of your neighborhood? There is a way, and we call it "accenting with light".
The purpose of lighting your landscape is to enhance your home while adding security. A well lit home is a deterrent to prowlers. So, let us begin by looking at the method of accenting with light and the products we use to get the job done.
Neighboring properties impact the view of your home and how it presents itself to the viewer. During daylight, you can't control the background, but at night, the background disappears when light is added to the foreground.

Improve Your Soil by Raking Less
If you dread the annual fall leaf-raking marathon, I have good news for you: Raking and collecting leaves every autumn is a tradition without scientific basis. Research has proven that mowing leaves into your lawn can improve its vigor, and observation shows that unraked leaves in planting beds don't smother shade-tolerant perennials.
Based upon research at several universities, the organic matter and nutrients from leaves mown into lawn areas has been proven to improve turf quality. The tests resulted in improved soil and healthy lawns with few remnant leaves visible the following spring.
You can achieve similar results if you set your mower to cut at 3 inches, and mow at least once a week during peak leaf fall when your lawn reaches a height of 4 inches. Leaves shred most efficiently when slightly damp, so mow after a light dew. If you follow these simple guidelines, you will never rake another leaf and improve the quality of your soil.

Creating Winter Interest in the Garden
As fall colors fade and temperatures start to lower, there are still many plants to enjoy in the garden. Gardening in the Midwest should not be a three-season hobby; it should fill you with enjoyment all year round. In order to appreciate the winter garden you must observe the subtle beauty of nature and what interest it can provide. Imagine the Pin Oak's resilient leaves, the sparkling, ice-covered berries of Holly and Viburnum, the graceful shape of a Japanese Maple, and the curling bark of the River Birch. The following list of plants will help complete your landscape with four season interest and enjoyment.
Evergreens - look for differences in shape, foliage/needle
color and texture.
Abies-Fir
Buxus-Boxwood
Cedrus atlantica-Blue Atlas Cedar

"Chap Stick"
For Broadleaf Evergreens
If you find yourself reaching for Chap Stick because your lips feel dry, then it may be time to treat your broadleaf evergreens with an anti-desiccant spray like "Wilt Stop." This simple spray will prevent evergreens like holly, boxwood, magnolia, azaleas, rhododendrons, and laurel from losing foliar moisture during the dry, windy winter season. This wax-like protectant will help reduce leaf loss and winter burn. Apply in mid-late fall and again in January when the weather permits.

Start Planning NEXT Season NOW!
Fall-sown annual seeds, including some of our flower mixes, will emerge as soon as Mother Nature cooperates, allowing plants to grow larger more quickly and bloom earlier than spring-sown annuals. If you live in an area with frost and snow, sow the seeds after a killing freeze but before snow (late October, early November in most areas) or you can also sow in late winter between snows. The snow helps bury seeds and insulates them, helping to retain the seeds' moisture. In southern states and other mild winter areas, you can sow in late September for winter bloom. Adding a little sand to the seeds not only helps space seeds more evenly, but also gives you a better visual aid of where you sowed in case you need to water over a dry winter. Don't forget to mark what and where you sowed with some handy garden stakes so you don't accidentally weed out emerging flowers! NEW VARIETY from Botanical Interests: Galilee Blend larkspur is gorgeous when grown in mass at the back of a border, against a wall or fence, or in a wildflower or naturalized garden. A delight for bees and butterflies, it blooms from late spring to early summer, and in mild climates can continue through fall. Self-sows readily. Colors may include carmine red, lilac, salmon, blue, pink, and white. Choose from our great selection of Botanical Interests flower seeds for this new variety and more available in our Garden Center.
