Another bit of news is that we are having a TENT SALE!!!  Time to move merchandise of all types.  It will run from Thurs thru Sun with new items being added daily.....

Enjoy these cool, crisp days outside!

Why Plant a Tree?

There are many reasons to plant a new tree such as shade, energy savings, wildlife habitat, edible fruit, decorative fruit, fall color or screening. Whatever the reason for wanting a new tree, you can be assured that there are many different options to choose from. You can find trees of every size, shape and color at Hillermann's. No matter what your site conditions are, there is a tree that will work. Know your environmental conditions for the area that you want to plant; conditions like sunlight, moisture levels and soil type will be important factors to be aware of when choosing your tree. Do you have size constraints? No problem, there is a tree for you. You can find everything from a tree that can create a canopy over a street or one that will be perfect in that small pocket of your garden.

Conservation:
A properly placed shade tree can reduce your air conditioning bill by as much as 25%. Planting a shade tree due west or east of a window will reduce the amount of sun reaching your home.

Fertilome Winterizer lawn fertilizer available at Hillermann Nursery and Florist
Lawn Winterizer - The Most Important Time to Feed Your Lawn is NOW!

Late fall is the most important time for lawn feeding of the year. If you would only be able to fertilize your lawn once, this is the best time to do it. We recommend using Fertilome Lawn Winterizer. You can apply this anytime in fall but the ideal time is October or November. Since your lawn is approaching dormancy now, nearly all of the nutrients are used to promote root growth and very little for top growth.
Fertilome Lawn Winterizer contains extra potassium for winter hardiness and 30% slow release nitrogen. This builds a very dense, healthy turf and provides stored nutrients that will encourage early spring green up, often up to two weeks earlier than lawns that don't receive a fall feeding.
There are a couple of additional lawn tips for late fall to include here. At the last mowing of the season, drop the mower blades a notch or two. This will help reduce snow mold and encourage a quicker green up next spring. Edge the lawn along the driveway and sidewalks. This will make it easier for snow removal this winter.

Keep a Feeder Up for Migrating Hummingbirds!

Hummingbirds at a feeder       We have been recommending that you leave hummingbird feeders up until Mid-October while migrating birds make their way south. However, we received a letter from one of our readers that she has seen hummers later than that in our area. With that in mind, you may want to leave a hummingbird feeder up a little longer. It surely will not hurt to leave a feeder up until freezing weather sets in. Below is the letter from MaryAnn who lives in Villa Ridge, Missouri.

I've noticed on your newsletters that you routinely advise taking down hummingbird feeders in mid-October. I just wanted to let you know about my experience in Villa Ridge. I usually have 4-5 feeders hanging in various spots in my large yard and as the season ends I used to take them down one by one leaving one up till the end of October "just in case." One year on Halloween I was literally reaching up to take the last one down and a little male swooped in and gave me a look like "Don't you dare!" Ever since then, I always leave the last feeder up till a couple of hard frosts or the end of November now "just in case". Just because you're not seeing/hearing any doesn't mean that there aren't any stragglers left...who will be very grateful for finding your feeder. I (and any straggler hummers) would appreciate it if you changed your advice.

Thanks, MaryAnn Kuhlenberg

The Fall Table

While food may be the main attraction around the holidays, entertaining isn't complete without a beautiful setting for dining. Wow your guests this season with these beautiful fall table-toppers.
BRING THE OUTSIDE IN. Wrap votive candleholders or vases in unexpected materials, like twine or cornhusks, for an autumn feel. Use other natural, backyard elements - acorns, moss, fern, even cattails - and finish the table with white, classic tableware. The contrast is not only striking; it's easy to achieve.
RAKE UP SOME DÉCOR. Pair brightly hued clusters of leaves under clear plates for a simple alternative to placemats, or place a sprig in the tie around a rolled napkin. Give an old standby new life by creating a leaf collage under a sheer tablecloth.
CREATE CENTERPIECES. Experiment with the staples of the season to get guests talking. Clean out a pumpkin and place a shallow vase of flowers within for an unexpected finish. Guests will remember your originality.
PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD. Bright red peppers, deep purple beets, buttery yellow squash, and rich, soil-brown potatoes create a natural and homey feel. The vivid autumn colors of oranges or bosc pears, along with seasonal Indian corn and walnuts, make beautiful fall decorations. Arrange them into a simple centerpiece or use as the anchor for place cards.
WORK WITH WHAT YOU HAVE. Fall entertaining is about gathering with loved ones, and decorations can be easy. If your tableware is understated, for example, use brightly colored napkins or use clear glassware and let the color of your drinks bring a pop of color. Or, use your favorite plates and incorporate subtle seasonal accents, like a smattering of pinecones or miniature pumpkins spray-painted to your liking.

Flower bulb selection available at Hillermann Nursery and Florist
Bedtime for Bulbs

Dreaming of spring color? Here's the drill: Buy hardy bulbs now and plant them before the ground freezes. Get the job done fast and efficiently with these tips.

Clear a Spot. If you're searching for spaces to tuck in bulbs, focus first on fall garden cleanup. Open area will be revealed when you pull out spent annuals and cut back perennials.

Choose a Tool. Dibbles and trowels are good for digging individual holes for small bulbs. An auger attached to a drill reduces fatigue if you have lots of holes to dig. Use a shovel to excavate one hole for a large clump of a dozen or more bulbs.

Dig the Right Depth. Plant bulbs at a depth three times their height. Tulips and hyacinths should be 6 to 7 inches deep, daffodils, 8 inches deep and crocus 3 inches deep.

Bury the Treasure. Make sure the growing tip is pointing up. Cover with soil and water. Spread mulch over the top to prevent heaving from freezing and thawing.

Adoptable dog, Dallas, from Franklin County Humane Society Featured Adoptable Pet

Hello, my name is Dallas. I am a 5 month old rapidly growing Dane and Pit Bull mix. I am sweet, charming and I love to eat food and to be with people. I am pretty thin, as I am growing so fast, that it is hard to eat enough. I have lots of energy, but not so much that I am too much to handle. I assure that we will be a wonderful happy family if you just give me a chance.
       Love and kisses, Dallas
