Dear Friends,
The picture and quote below sums up how I feel, as well as many others, about this time of year. Additionally, many of us know that the autumn season is a great time to plant, decorate and celebrate. Trees and shrubs can easily get better accustomed to their newly planted area during the milder fall temperatures. Colorful spring bulbs need to be planted now to encourage their beautiful spring show. If you have questions about what to plant and how to care for your plants, visit us. We have many knowledgeable staff members who can offer advice.
You're invited to join us for the events listed below. We also have a Coffee and Conversation group discussion with a new topic every Saturday at 8:30 am. Join us at anytime - no sign up, obligation or cost. Our staff is also available during our open hours to help with any lawn, garden and plant questions you have.
Come see us during this fun season!

Autumn is the Second Spring
By Patty Lynch
The landscape around us is obviously winding down as the days grow cooler and the nights get longer. Mid to late fall is the best time of year to add plants in the landscape and to work in the garden. The reason is simple, fall weather. It is kind to human beings as well as to newly planted trees, shrubs and perennial plants. In fall, the soil still holds summer's warmth, which encourages root growth up until the ground freezes. This gets perennials, shrubs, and trees off to a faster start for the following spring. Also, plants that are planted in fall don't have to deal with heat and drought early in their young lives. By late next spring, when things begin to heat up, the plants roots will be ready for their job of absorbing and circulating nutrients and water.
The following is a list of newer and unusual plants that we would like to introduce to you. Visit us for help with your questions on these and other plants for your yard and gardens.

Fall Frost is On It's Way
The fresh fall air feels nice when spending time outdoors. However, as the temperatures get cooler, we need to consider the possibilities of frost and the effects it will have in our gardens and landscape. With the changeable weather our area receives, it is hard to know when the first frost will arrive. Now is the time to keep a close eye on the local weather forecasts and be prepared to take measures to protect tender garden and landscape plants.
If you have not yet moved your houseplants in for winter, you should do so now. Tender plants will not likely survive through a light frost with temperatures from 29° to 32° Fahrenheit.

 Save the Geraniums
Unlike most annuals, geraniums can survive in a dormant state for long periods, and some gardeners save them through winter to re-plant the next spring. Following are the steps to take to save the plants for next year.
Clean Off Soil - Carefully dig up the plant before the first frost. Shake off the soil so that the plant roots are bare.
Store the Plant - Roll the plant up in newspaper, or place in a paper bag. Some gardeners simply hang the plants upside down. Regardless, store in a dark, dry, cool place (but don't let it freeze) - a basement is perfect. Two or three time during winter, soak the plant in water for 1-2 hours, remove any dead stems or leaves, then return to storage after it has dried.
Replant in Spring - When weather begins to warm, pot the plant up in fresh soil, keep it well-watered, and watch it grow!

 Hillermann's October Top Tips
The average first frost usually arrives about October 15th to October 20th.
ANNUALS & PERENNIALS
* Once annuals and perennials have been killed by frost, cut them back - ˝ way on perennials and completely remove annuals. If you lay the tops of perennials over the crown of the plant it will give them winter protection.
BIRDS
* Take down hummingbird feeders in mid October.
BULBS
* Cannas, Dahlias and Elephant Ears can be dug when frost nips their foliage. Before storing them, allow the plants to dry under cover in an airy frost free place. Store in a cool, dry area, such as a basement, in paper sacks with peat moss.
